Floyd #FreeBoxing Rumor Holds Firm
We are once again on Floydwatch, my friends.
Seems like that is the case for a good three months of the year, when we watch social media, when our antennae perk up, as we seek to get the drop on what “TBE” will do next.
We know he has the MGM booked for Sept. 12. Who he fights, and on what platform, we don’t know.
I’ve heard from separate sources now that the idea of Floyd fighting on “free” TV isn’t outlandish and we might get that, a Floyd vs. TBD fight on CBS, in prime-time, the possibility of eyeballs galore on the table.
That makes sense from a: 1) Give back perspective. Being that #MayPac underwhelmed, it’s that much harder with it fresh in folks’ minds to get them to pony up for another PPV, and their wallets could use a break; 2) Marketing perspective. If Floyd fights, say, Andre Berto and wins, he’s 49-0, breaks the Marciano record…and like ten million people see it, and maybe help spread the word, versus the 20% of that which would see it on PPV; 3) Thematic perspective. Haymon has been blanketing adspace with the #freeboxing hashtag and concept and push, and his fighters have been dropping the hashtag everywhere. Lovely concept, but much more meaningful if attached to a mega-event, such as Floyd vs. TBD on FREE TV.
I was told by a connected guy, who heard it from a friend that Floyd is working on extending his Showtime deal, for fights No. 50 and No. 51, and is also working on an extension of terms with the MGM.
I asked a spokesman at Showtime to comment on what I heard, and will add a response if received. Same for MGM; they answered and offered a polite “do not wish to comment.”
So, when do we hear plans for next? Floyd has been on a ‘live it up’ party tour, doing club gigs, etc and that seems to be winding down. Sept 12 is a scant eight weeks away so I’m guessing we hear any day. This is, to an extent, Floyd’s world, we are simply renting space from him…
