Shane Mosley Wins By KO and Other Results

INGLEWOOD, CA.-Seven years after their first encounter it was Sugar Shane Mosley again winning by knockout over Ricardo “Matador” Mayorga in an entertaining fight at the Inglewood Forum on Saturday.

“I felt good in there,” said Mosley who had not fought in two years. “He came to fight.”

Mosley served as promoter, matchmaker and just about everything else as he defeated Nicaragua’s super tough but always entertaining Mayorga.

A crowd of more than 2,600 at the Forum saw Mosley (48-9-1, 40 Kos) use his quickness and speed to avoid the always dangerous Mayorga (31-9-1, 25 Kos). But his right hand just couldn’t miss from the first round on. Mayorga withstood every blow for the first three rounds.

Mayorga was game and motioned repeatedly for Mosley to attack throughout the fight. The extra weight allowed the Nicaraguan to absorb punches from the lighter fighter from Pomona. Mayorga weighed in heavy at seven pounds over the agreed upon weight and forfeited part of his purse.

“I hit him with some good shots. A lesser man would have went down,” Mosley said. “He was kind of discouraging.”

It was all Mosley who seemed to win every round. But in the sixth round Mayorga connected with a wild right and seemed to have Mosley hurt. The Pomona fighter staggered around the ring. But once he regained his footing he landed a left hook to the body and down went Mayorga for the count. He could not get up as his corner motioned for him to rise. The fight ended at 2:59 of the sixth round.

“He stunned me,” admitted Mosley. “The head shots were so easy but I knew the body shots would do it.”

Female title fight

A female world title fight between Mexico’s Yulihan Luna Avila (12-2-1) the IBF super bantamweight titlist and New York’s Maureen Shea (24-2-1) ended in a draw after 10 back and forth rounds.

Luna used her longer reach and quick combos to keep Shea at bay for the first two rounds. But the New Yorker closed the distance and managed to connect solidly with her right hands. The first half of the fight saw both looking to counter. But the second half of the fight saw Shea attack more freely and things changed.

Neither fighter was ever hurt by the other but Shea’s face reddened early.

Luna, 21, used her reach to keep from sustaining too many flush shots.

After 10 rounds the judges scored the fight 96-94 for Luna, 96-94 for Shea and 95-95 for a draw. The title remains with Luna.

Diaz

Hot prospect Joel Diaz Jr. (20-0, 16 Kos) met strong-willed Luis “Vampiro” Arceo (28-14-4) of Mexico in a lightweight clash and ended the fight with a crunching right cross in the fourth round. Arceo was bleeding in both eyes but never seemed to wilt. Both exchanged freely throughout their fight. Diaz seemed the stronger puncher and was able to land his left hook with power. But it was a right that ended the fight at 1:27 of the fourth round. Diaz trains in Big Bear with Abel Sanchez.

Undefeated Ronald Ellis (12-0) kept his record unblemished winning by technical knockout of Jas Phipps (5-6-3) in a super middleweight fight. Phipps was dropped early with a left hook in the first round. In the second round Phipps seemed to get tangled with Ellis and left cringing with his arm dangling. The referee Tony Crebs stopped the fight at 1:15 of round two.

A cruiserweight fight between undefeated Dimar Ortuz (10-0-2) and Oxnard’s Victor Barragan 12-8-1) ended in a draw after weight rounds. Barragan scored knockdowns in the second and eighth round but it wasn’t enough to convince all three judges. One judge had it for Barragan 76- 74, but the others had it 74-76 and 75-75.
