How Does Mayweather Want To Be Remembered? “As An Honest Person”
It may have been, absolutely nobody thinks, the wrap-up to the last call, the epilogue to a lengthy career of a most talented, sometimes troubled athlete who has made more money as a “guy you love to hate” than anyone in the sports-world, Floyd Mayweather.
Showtime ran their All Access finale, after the replay of Floyd Mayweathers’ sparsely attended, poorly received adios effort, against underdog Andre Berto, who under-delivered and along with Floyd, had most fans feeling unfullfilled after they paid $75 or so to watch a sparring-level tussle.
In the preamble to the documercial special, we saw Floyd say he was born to be a fighter, and has been doing that his whole life, inside and outside the ring. We saw rehash of some quotes, such as how he admits his persona is a deliberate way of being, to market himself.
Then “AA” kicked in, and we saw Money May doing a press hit, and then to the arena. Berto says he is coming for his respect…strange to watch this knowing what we know…
Virgil Hunter his trainer says, “Trust me, it’s gonna be a rumble,” because they had some bad blood going on…aaaaannnnd we know how that played out…
Floyd goes through his scrapbook, says “white boy” Larry Shields (his eighth pro foe) was tough, points to a pic of Pacman postfight and says, “You what he’s saying to me right here? Can I get another payday?”
Berto does a BBQ, and we hear his gal pal say Mayweather will fight again, because he’ll want a rematch after her guy beats him. Er, no..
It’s fight day, and then fight night. Floyd watches prefight TV hype…Berto gets dressed, and chats with Jim Gray. He says he will be smart and stick to the gameplan. Justin Bieber and Floyd talk instagram numbers and Floyd asks Biebs to post a plea to buy the PPV. Maybe the sparse numbers are Biebs’ fault?
Berto’s pop tells him to go to war, and Virgil Hunter tells AB he is one of the best, who belongs with Floyd.
The Berto galpal can’t believe the the future is here, the fight will actually happen..
We see action, and Floyd and pop say they love each other….
Don’t be scared to lose, quit standing there, strike, strike, yells Hunter…
Berto’s kid, age 12, notes his dad shows the same face as when he’s mad at the boy…
Floyd looks more loose than he does during sparring…
Hunter threatens to stop things if they don’t pick up, before round seven!
Floyd sticks out his tongue at Berto’s gal, and she flips him the bird.
Running from me, Berto yells at Floyd, after Virgil again tells his guy to pick it up.
Dad Berto says son has to stop Money…
Then Floyd says his left hand hurts and Virgil yells at Berto for falling for stuff but says it’s close…”He’s making a mockery of you,” says a salty Virgil.
Floyd before the last round says, “Love you baby,” to pop, and promises to remember all lessons from the get go. Uncle Roger yells in appreciation, wearing a You Don’t Know S—T About Boxing shirt, a strange choice, arguably, after we now know the depth of his health issues…
It’s over..
MM and Berto hug, after Berto tells Virgil Floyd ran, and then Floyd tells Berto he’s tough. Floyd is thanked for the opportunity…I tell you, these outsized pay checks change dynamics…
The Mayweather kids exult.
Jim Gray asks about the hurt hand, before retirement…
In the Berto dressing room, we see Hunter say, “If he had Maidanas’ intensity, he would have knocked Floyd out,” to papa Berto, who agrees, says, “definitely.” Delusion and defenses and self salving of egos is in evidence often in such situations. It is a time for coping, at all costs, not clarity.
Gray sits next to Floyd and Jim Gray and asks, “How do you want to be remembered?” Floyd reflects, and says, “As an honest person. As an honest person, I spoke my mind. Am I wrong for saying that…I’m the best? Don’t it also show…don’t it show?”
Gray asks, does he want to be liked?
Floyd hesitates, answers without answering, then offers this: “It doesn’t matter..as long as God loves me, and I’m speaking from the heart, that’s what counts.”
Floyd speaks at the post-fight presser, says he’s accomplished it all…now he’s satisfied, the narrator tells us. Uh huh, OK…
“I changed not just the sport of boxing, but sports period,” are the last words we hear him say, in the last All Access starring Mayweather ever….allegedly.
Allegedly…
