Female Fight Chatter – Hardy, Lauren and Others

The women’s fight world suddenly has interest with the controversial selection of UFC’s Ronda Rousey on the front cover of Ring Magazine and subsequent loss to former boxing champion Holly Holm. It seemed to open eyes to the existence of the female fight world.

Unknown to many, is that women’s boxing has been around far longer than female MMA and continues to grow.

The only missing element has been a lack of televised fights.

Worldwide female fights are occurring on a weekly basis. Though there are fewer women boxing than men, the ranks of female fighters are growing in Asia, Europe, South America and in other parts of the world.

Here is what is happening this week in female boxing and also what transpired last week:

Upcoming fights

Undefeated Heather Hardy (15-0) faces Noemi Bosques (10-3-2) in a super bantamweight showdown on Saturday Dec. 5, at Barclays Center in Brooklyn. This is a rematch between the two female fighters. Their first match ended in a split-decision win for Hardy that took place last May in the same venue. Hardy, 33, lives and trains out of Brooklyn. Bosques, 32, fights out of St. Petersburg, Florida.

Russia’s Marina Popova (2-0) faces Sarah Achieng (10-2) for the vacant UBO Inter-continental lightweight title on Saturday Dec. 5. The female title match takes place in Pyatigorsk, Russia. Popov, 24, will be facing the hard-hitting Achieng of Kenya who is fighting for the first time outside of Africa.

Angelique Duchemin (9-0) meets Maria Semertzoglou (5-0) for the vacant EBU super featherweight title on Friday Dec. 4, in Perpignan, France. Duchemin, 24, will be fighting near her hometown. Semertzoglou fights out of Athens, Greece.

Victoria Cisneros (11-18-2) and Yolanda Segura (16-10) tangle in a battle to see who ends their losing streak on Friday in Guanajuato, Mexico. Both female welterweights have four-fight losing streaks. Cisneros, 30, fights out of New Mexico and is known as “The Queen of War.” All of her losses have been to current or former world champions. Segura lost two of her last four fights to former world champions. Ana Julaton handed her last defeat in March. Segura fights out of Tamaulipas, Mexico.

Japan’s former flyweight world champion Shindo Go (15-3, 10 Kos) fights Suda Saknarong who is making her pro debut on Saturday Dec. 5, in Osaka, Japan. Go, 28, is a former WBC flyweight titlist. She was defeated by Mexico’s Arely Mucino a year ago in Monterrey, Mexico.

Female fight results

Jessebelle Pagaduan (8-1-1) defeated Christine Latube (1-8-2) by unanimous decision to win the vacant Philippine’s GAB lightweight title. Their eight-round match took place Sunday Nov. 29, in Benguet, Philippines.

Laura Soledad Griffa (10-0) captured the vacant Argentine super bantamweight title by unanimous decision over Marisa Johanna Portillo (16-11-2). Griffa, 29, fights out of Buenos Aires, Argentina. Portillo, 27, fights out of Rosario, Argentina.

France’s Laetitia Arzalier (8-1) won the vacant EBU light flyweight title by technical knockout over Hungary’s Kleopatra Tolnai (4-4). The female title match was held in Herault, France on Saturday Nov. 28. Arzalier, 31, forced a stoppage at the end of the second round.

Anabel Ortiz (19-3) defeated Suri Tapia (7-6) by unanimous decision after 10 rounds in a mini- flyweight bout that took place on Saturday Nov. 28, in Queretaro, Mexico. Ortiz, 29, fights out of Tepic, Mexico and is the current WBA world titlist. Tapia, 26, lives and trains out of Acapulco, Mexico.

WBC female super welterweight titlist Mikaela Lauren (26-3, 11 Kos) of Sweden knocked out Germany’s Jennifer Retzke (15-3-1) at the end of the fifth round to retain the world title. Lauren, 39, was making her second defense of the title. The match took place in Vasteraas, Sweden on Saturday Nov. 28.

Ewa Piatkowska (8-1) defeated Marie Riederer (15-4-1) by unanimous decision after 10 rounds to win the vacant EBU female welterweight title. The match was held in Rzeszow, Poland on Friday Nov. 27. Piatkowska, 31, fights out Warsaw, Poland. Riederer, 27, lives and trains in Sachsen, Germany.
