“Toe To Toe Tuesdays” Jan 19 – Complete Results From Club Nokia
The Premier Boxing Champions and promoter Tom Brown are in Los Angeles all week. On Tuesday, January 19th they booked the Club Nokia for a nine fight boxing card that will see the main events air on Fox Sports 1 as part of the “Toe To Toe Tuesdays” series.
The Spanish language broadcast opened with David Benavidez (11-0) taking on Kevin Cobbs (10-1) in an eight round bout at Light Heavyweight. From the start Benavides was moving forward and stalking, and he was working the body. By the second round Cobbs was backing up and getting caught by hard shots. Once Benavides had Cobbs wobbly and hurt, he was relentless and he hit Cobbs until the ref stepped in at the 1:08 mark.
With the television production taking over at 8PM Pacific Time, the 6 round Middleweight bout between Malcolm McAllister (6-0) and Tyrone Selders (9-7-1) became the swing fight of the evening. With the Benavides fight running short, this was the second fight of the broadcast.
This one started out a barnburner. Selders came out throwing aggressively and McAllister landed a sharp counter that sent Selders reeling. He managed to keep his feet, but the ref gave him standing eight count. Though it looked like he might not get through the round, Selders managed to get composed and the round ended with both men throwing. The second round saw more of the same as McAllister had his best moments counter-punching when Selders got wild. At the start of the third McAllister was fighting well, but he was cut and Selders was not going away. For McAllister all of his six wins are by KO, and when he sensed he had hurt Selders he came in and he earned his seventh, trapping his opponent in the corner and landing big shots until the ref stopped it at the 2:39 mark of round 3.
Nashville’s Caleb Plant (11-0) was next, facing Spain’s Adasat Rodriguez (11-4-2) in a hotly anticipated Middleweight eight rounder. Plant was noticably the bigger fighter, but Rodriguez was the one coming forward as Plant’s movement was constant. Plant did cut Rodriguez above an eye, and by the end of the round the Spaniard had a second cut due to a head butt. Rodriguez missed a lot of punches while Plant used a high-precision game to win the next couple of rounds. In the sixth Plant became more aggressive and in an exchange where both men were opening up he sent Rodriguez reeling backwards into the corner. He followed and landed two heavy shots before the referee moved in for the save. Rodriguez briefly protested, as the ref may have stepped in a touch early.

The main event of the evening was a welterweight bout at 10 rounds as undefeated Jamal James (18-0) met once beaten 2008 Olympian Javier Molina (17-1). James enjoyed a clear height and reach advantage, and he landed the best punch of the round when he appeared to rattle Molina with a straight shot. The match turned into a heated technical battle as both men initiated exchanges throughout rounds three through five. The match was relatively even as Molina was the one coming forward, and he landed several power punches in the exchanges that affected James as round five drew to a close. The sixth started out with more of the same as Molina was attacking in the opening minute. By the end of the round however, James had turned the tables and he was the one dictating the pace as Molina backed off. James appeared to have taken his corner’s advice seriously, as the second half of the fight saw him start to bank rounds. Entering the ninth round, the broadcast crew had the fight even. James had a strong ninth as well, and the tenth started with the crowd chanting “Molina, Molina”. The final round settled into more of the same as both men had spent themselves in a closely contested battle. When the judges cards were read, it was not that close as the bout went to James by scores of 99-91, 98-92 and 97-93.
Of note on the undercard, Sanjarbek Rakhmanov (3-0) of Uzbekistan put a hurting on Jose Miguel Castro (5-6), getting the TKO 87 seconds into the 4th round after a series of viscious left hooks to the body. Rakhmanov moves to (4-0) and the word is that has re-located to Las Vegas and will be training out of the Mayweather Boxing Gym.
At Lighheavyweight, undefeated southpaw Ronald Mixon (5-0) using his length to land a series of crushing left hands on opponent Cristian Solorzano (3-6) that sent him to the canvas in the opening round. Mixon completed the job in round two, earning the stop at the 1:49 mark.
The end of the week sees the PBC hook up with promoter Tom Brown again as they are at the Staples Center on Saturday with a full card headlined by the WBC World Welterweight title fight between Danny Garcia (31-0) and Robert “The Ghost” Guerrero (33-3-1).
