Kali Reis Takes First Step On World Title Run This Friday
Kali Reis Takes First Step – In the world of women’s boxing, Rhode Island’s Kali Reis is known as a “Road Warrior”. This Friday, February 19th, Reis fights at home for the first time in roughly two years, as she headlines the Twin River Event Center in Providence facing veteran Victoria Cisneros.
The minor UBF world title at Super Welterweight is on the line, but Reis has her eyes set on bigger prizes.
Not that Reis is looking past Cisneros this weekend, but on April 16th she is scheduled to travel to New Zealand to fight Maricela Cornejo (4-1) for the vacant WBC World Middleweight title. Reis will be a comfortable favorite against Cisneros this Friday, a treatment she is not used to receiving lately.
In July of 2014, Reis traveled to Spain to fight decorated champion Mikaela Lauren, and she took a narrow 77-74, 77-75, 77-75 loss on the judge’s cards in an eight round bout. Reis then picked up a minor IBA Middleweight title fighting in Bermuda before she went to Germany to face Christina Hammer.

Hammer was 17-0 at the time and the WBO Middleweight champion of the world. Reis went into Hammer’s home town and took her the distance, sending her to the canvas early in the fight before losing the 10 round decision.
Reis’ last outing was in Costa Rica, where she battled WBO World Super Welterweight champion Hanna Gabriel the distance over 10 rounds this past October.
Though taking tough fights on the road has left Reis with a 7-5-1 overall record, it has also left her with the confidence that she can “hang” with the sport’s top level of fighters.
Cornejo is a talent, but Reis has been paying her dues the last two years and remains focused on the craft of boxing. In Providence, she trains with a team that includes former WBO Light Middleweight Champion Demetrious “BooBoo” Andrade and Kali Reis is hoping to bring another major world title into the team’s fold. Her quest begins this Friday.
