Media Call: Kiko Martinez vs Leo Santa Cruz
Kiko Martinez vs Leo Santa Cruz – As a prelude to Saturday’s WBA Super World Featherweight title bout between Leo Santa Cruz and Kiko Martinez, both fighters participated in a conference call with the media this afternoon.
The fight comes to us from the Honda Center in Anaheim, California and airs on Showtime in the United States.
The bout sees Santa Cruz (31-0-1) defending his WBA title against Martinez (35-6) a former world champion who won the IBF World title at Super Bantamweight in his only previous state-side appearance.
Typical of this type of media scrum, both fighters were very respectful of each other. Though Santa Cruz is a heavy favorite, he expressed that he has maintained his high level of training and preparation and that he is not looking past Martinez.
Martinez wanted to leave the message clear that he came to win. He has taken the fight seriously and has retained his hunger to fight.
Martinez manager, Sampson Lewkowics chimed in stating “I like Leo and his father, we have worked together in the past. It is because I like them that I promise we will give them a re-match. We are coming to win”.
Martinez has been preparing for this fight with Gabriel Sarmiento, the trainer responsible for Sergio “Maravilla” Martinez, and Kiko feels that he has taken his game to a whole new level.
The co-feature bout is at Super Bantamweight as Julio Ceja (30-1) and Hugo Ruiz (35-3) meet in a re-match for the WBC world title.
The opening bout on the broadcast features Heavyweights as undefeated Gerald Washington (16-0-1) takes on Oscar Rivas (18-0) in a 10 round bout.
