Keith Thurman vs Shawn Porter Postponed, Thurman in Car Accident
Keith Thurman vs Shawn Porter Postponed – According to promoter Lou DiBella, undefeated WBA welterweight champion Keith Thurman (26-0, 22 KOs) suffered a neck injury in a car accident last week that forces the postponement of his upcoming match with former IBF and WBO welterweight titlist Shawn Porter (26-1-1, 16 KOs). The bout, scheduled for March 12 at the Mohegan Sun Casino in Uncasville, Connecticut, was to be televised on CBS. It would have been the first primetime boxing event on the network since 1978.
DiBella provided no specifics about the accident other than to say that it occurred during a rainstorm. Thurman suffered a whiplash type of injury when the air bag deployed. The injury, says DiBella, is not career-threatening and Porter will resume training in 4-6 weeks.

DiBella hopes to rework the show and shift it to Showtime while salvaging what was to be the chief undercard bout, a 10-round contest between former bantamweight champions Abner Mares and Fernando Montiel. The Mares-Montiel scrap was scheduled to be part of the CBS broadcast. The rest of the card also features the Light heavyweight encounter between Edwin Rodriguez (28-1) and Thomas Williams Jr (19-1), and a WBC World Featherweight title defense for Gary Russell Jr has been added, as he faced Patrick Hyland (31-1).
No tentative date has been mentioned for a re-schedule, and it is obviously unclear at this point how the postponement will affect the CBS deal. More details will be provided as they become available.
