Round-Up Of Boxing’s Huge Weekend

Published

on

Huge Weekend – February 27th has the possibility to completely reshape the boxing world, as several action-packed world title fights will take place all around the globe.

Live at the Madison Square Garden in New York, Terence Crawford will not only put his undefeated record of 27-0 to the test, he’ll put his WBO World Super Lightweight title on the line against the current WBC Continental Americas Lightweight Champion Henry Lundy.

Undoubtedly, Terence Crawford is one of the best boxers right now. He has proved to be a very dominant and talented champion. Most recently, he defeated the multi-time world title contender Dierry Jean by TKO in dominant fashion, and hoped for a fight against Manny Pacquiao. In Crawford’s very successful career, he has defeated some of the other top lightweights in the world; Thomas Dulorme, Raymundo Beltran, Yuriorkis Gamboa and Ricky Burns.

The underdog, Henry Lundy, will take on his toughest test come Saturday evening. He currently holds a record of 26-5-1 (13KOs). The 32 year old became the WBC Continental Americas Lightweight Champion on October 17th, 2015 when he defeated veteran Carlos Winston Velasquez (23-21-1 at the time). Lundy has been the WBO NABO Lightweight Champion (won in 2010 against Tyrese Hendrix) and the NABF Super Lightweight Champion (won in 2011 against Patrick Lopez). He has fought some other notable names in his nearly ten year professional career; Mauricio Herrera, Viktor Postol and Raymundo Beltran.

On Showtime, Leo Santa Cruz will attempt to defend his WBA Super World Featherweight Championship for the first time against a very difficult test in the former IBF World Super Bantamweight Champion Kiko Martinez.

Leo Santa Cruz has yet to taste defeat. In 2012, he won the IBF World Bantamweight title against Vusi Malinga. His next big title win occurred in 2013 when he knocked out Victor Terrazas to win the WBC World Super Bantamweight title, which he defended four times compiling wins over Cesar Seda, Manuel Roman, Jesus Ruiz and Cristian Mijares. He most recently defeated the former three-division world champion Abner Mares at the Staples Center to win the WBA Featherweight Title and increase his record to 31-0-1, in what was one of his more impressive performances.

Kiko Martinez reached stardom in 2013 when he defeated the previously undefeated Jhonatan Romero to win the IBF World Super Bantamweight title. After the TKO win, he went on to defend his title twice against Jeffrey Mathebula and Hozumi Hasegawa, both by way of knockout. In 2014, he took on Carl Frampton in a rematch and lost by a unanimous decision. After the loss, he beat Giorgi Gachechiladze (16-15-1 at the time) by TKO, than lost to the current WBA Champion Scott Quigg in a title fight. Since the loss, he has won his last three fights.

In the co-main event of Cruz vs. Martinez, Julio Ceja and Hugo Ruiz will square off again after a very exciting first match for the WBC Junior Featherweight Championship.

Julio Ceja, at just 23, has had a very successful and long career. His current record is 30-1 (27 KOs). Ceja’s lone loss comes to Jamie McDonnell. The two fought in 2013 for the IBF Title, but McDonnell was victorious by decision. Ceja and Ruiz had a great first fight, a fight that Ceja was losing after being knocked down, but he showed his will to win, and won by TKO awarding him the WBC World Champion.

Ruiz is currently 35-3 (KOs). Before the TKO loss to Ceja, he was riding a four fight winning streak. In 2013, he won the WBC Continental Americas title. He became the Interim WBA Bantamweight Champion in 2011, and defended it five times, before losing it to Koki Kameda in a very controversial decision loss.

Across the globe in Manchester, England, a highly anticipated title fight will occur between two unbeaten fighters on Showtime Extreme, as Carl Frampton (21-0) will take on Scott Quigg (31-0-2). Carl Frampton will put up his IBF World Super Bantamweight title, and Scott Quigg puts up his WBA Super World Super Bantamweight title in a unification bout.

Carl Frampton is the favorite to win this bout. He won his IBF title in 2014 after defeating Kiko Martinez for the second time. He then went on and defeated Chris Avalos by TKO. Most recently, he beat Alejando Gonzalez Jr. in his U.S. debut by decision after having a rocky start to the fight, being knocked down twice in the first round.

Scott Quigg was the undisputed BBBofC British Champion when he had the opportunity to fight for the interim WBA title against Rendall Munroe. Munroe and Quigg fought to a draw, but immediately had a rematch for the title again, and Quigg won by TKO. After beating William Prado in a non-title bout, he then fought Yoandris Salinas for the WBA title and had a draw. Since then, he has defended his title five times, including wins over Kiko Martinez and Stephane Jamoye.

There are several other great fighters fighting on the 27th, including Marco Huck, Cecilia Braekhus, Gerald Washington, Felix Verdejo and more.
