David Lemieux Misses Weight – De La Rosa Fight Cancelled

David Lemieux Misses Weight – What was to be a comeback fight this Saturday, March 12th for hard-hitting Canadian veteran David Lemieux is apparently not to be, as news is coming in from Montreal that Lemieux has missed weight for his match-up with James De la Rosa and the fight is a scratch.
Lemieux was making his return to action for the first time since his October of 2015 loss to Gennady Golovkin that saw his record fall to (34-3). De La Rosa (23-3) had not been active in sixteen months and was coming in as a heavy underdog to fight Lemieux.
Lemieux, a Montreal native who has headlined the 20,000 Bell Center in his hometown chose the 1,300 seat Olympia Theatre for this return, and he was headlining an eight card event. No word on whether the entire event is cancelled, but the cancellation of the fight is a big set back for Lemieux.
His fight with Golovkin earned him a solid payday and notoriety, but it was not a good performance for Lemieux, as he was broken down and stopped by the all-world Golovkin. With his solid career mark including 31 knock out wins, Lemieux was looking to position himself for a return to the Middleweight division’s top tax bracket. He was briefly mentioned as a candidate to fight Saul “Canelo” Alvarez, and there was talk of potential fights with Willie Monroe Jr and Peter Quillin, but that all seems to fall by the wayside.
The Montreal Gazzette is reporting additional details. The fight was apparently set at a catch-weight of 163 lbs, and De La Rosa weighed in at a comfortable 162 lbs. For his part, Lemieux weighed in at 165.6 lbs. A brief negotiation saw no agreement reached and De La Rosa pulled out of the fight.
Despite the small venue, the promoters may feel pressure to deliver Lemieux to their audience, and a search for a last minute opponent is said to be underway.
