Nick Blackwell Out Of Induced Coma
There is good news coming out of England regarding boxer Nick Blackwell. The BBC is reporting that the British middleweight has awakened out of an induced coma and is said to be both responsive to voices and to be speaking with the relatives that are by his side.
Blackwell is said to have regained consciousness on Saturday, April 2nd. However, the news was not made public until early Monday in the U.K. because of the Blackwell family's request for privacy. Nevertheless, the well wishes of the boxing world have been answered, as Blackwell seems to be out of immediate danger and is on the road to recovery.
Blackwell fought Chris Eubank Jr at Wembley Arena this past March 26th in a fight that aired on Channel 5, a free TV network. Blackwell's gutsy performance came to an end when the doctor called the fight due to the swelling above his eye late in the tenth round. He was responding after the fight, but collapsed and received medical attention in the ring before he was taken to the hospital. In the hospital, a CAT scan revealed a brain bleed, and he spent seven days in the induced coma.
Blackwell has received a lot of support from Britain's boxing scene, as a host of British fighters led by Tyson Fury and Carl Frampton took to social media to raise awareness and support. Heavyweight David Haye announced that he would be donating 50,000 British pounds to Blackwell to assist with the medical expenses.
Opponent Chris Eubank Jr and his famous father both expressed relief on social media upon hearing of the steps toward recovery that Blackwell has taken. The normally outrageous pair curtailed all celebration of their victory in honor of Blackwell. Today the elder Eubank Jr took to social media asking Blackwell to visit , saying “I have something for you.” Eubank Jr has conducted himself with good bit of class during all of this.
Blackwell is 25 years old and he is a former British Middleweight Champion with a 19-4-1 overall record. The news he is no longer in a coma is fantastic news, and young Blackwell will continue to have the support of the boxing world as both he and the sport of boxing try to put this incident behind him.
