Showtime Title Twin Bill At Foxwoods – Quick Results From Saturday Night

Showtime Title Twin Bill At Foxwoods – Lou DiBella and his DiBella Entertainment group were at the Foxwoods Resort in Connecticut Saturday night with an eight fight card that saw the main events air on Showtime.
The opening bout of the broadcast featured the return of former world titleholder Chad Dawson, as he faced Cornelius White in a light heavyweight ten round bout. Dawson earned the ref stoppage in the fourth round. The victory moves Dawson to 34-4 overall and gives him a second win in a row after a spell that saw him go 1-3.
Undefeated IBF World super featherweight champion Jose Pedraza (21-0) found himself in a war with England’s Stephen Smith. Smith, one of four fighting brothers, seemed determined to go home with the family’s second world title. He appeared a bit bigger than Pedraza, and he was able to establish himself as the busier fighter after a hot start by Pedraza. In round four he landed a shot that sent Pedraza to the canvas. Pedraza got up but he seemed to have lost some steam. Pedraza battled back to make round six and seven competitive, only to see Smith push and likely take round eight.
That is when things started to unravel for Smith.Pedraza came out swinging in round nine, finding the accuracy he had seemingly lost in the middle rounds. He sent Smith down to the canvas, and he spent the tenth round confidently unloading on Smith with power shots.
Smith showed his mettle in round eleven, fighting back to put Pedraza on the defensive and likely take the round, but. Pedraza closed like a champion. In the final stanza, Pedraza landed crunching blows to Smith, who would not back off and absorbed them all. In the end, the judges scored the fight in favor of Pedraza 117-110, 116-111, 116-111. A game effort for Smith, who goes home bitterly dissappointed.
WBC World featherweight champion Gary Russell Jr (26-1) took center stage for the final fight of the evening. Russell Jr was returning to action for the first time in roughly one year to take on Ireland’s Patrick Hyland (33-1) in what was his first title defense.
The first round saw the usual feeling out process, though Russell Jr flashed his hand speed and jab, managing the distance well versus the taller opponent from the southpaw stance.
In the second round, Russell Jr wasted no time in putting the pedal to the floor. He knocked Hyland down with a vicious shot that came after a body shot opened Hyland up. The Irishman got up only to be sent to he canvas twice more by the aggressive Russell Jr, who smelled blood. The end came at the 1:33 mark, as Hyland did not make it out of round 2.
