The Sweet Science Captures More Bernie Awards

The Sweet Science Captures More Bernie Awards – The Boxing Writers Association of America honors good writing each year with the presentation of the Bernie awards. The awards for the 2015 calendar year were announced on Wednesday, April 20. The Sweet Science has fared well in this competition and 2015 was no exception.
Hats off to Diego M. Morilla who placed first in the category of best column for “Billion Dollar Baby.” Morilla’s lengthy story, published here on May 2, 2015, chastised Bob Arum for stalling the Mayweather-Pacquiao fight until both fighters were past their prime.

Springs Toledo won second place in the events coverage category for “Jack Demsey’s” and garnered another second place finish for “The Ringside Belle” which was honored in the investigative reporting category.
“Jack Demsey’s” (and no, that’s not a typo), published on May 27, framed the Klitschko-Jennings fight against the backdrop of Jack Dempsey’s achievements and persona. “The Ringside Belle” was a period piece that delved into the life of Hollywood sex symbol Mae West, a woman who enjoyed the company of prizefighters. The story ran in three parts: February 5, 8, and 12.
Focusing only on stories that appeared on this web site, Springs Toledo is our most decorated writer. His haul of Bernie awards since 2010 numbers 22. That’s more than frequent TSS contributor Thomas Hauser who nailed yet another first place finish this year, nosing out Toledo in the investigative reporting category for “Can Boxing Trust USADA?,” a piece that appeared on SB Nation.
Bernard Fernandez, a regular contributor to these pages, won second place in the news story category for “Beyond The Blue Horizon,” a piece that ran in the Philadelphia Daily News where Fernandez came to prominence as a boxing reporter. Fernandez, Ronan Keenan, and the aforementioned Hauser were acknowledged with “honorable mentions” for stories that appeared on this site.
A full list of all the 2015 Bernie award winners can be found on the facebook page of the BWAA. The awards dinner, which is open to the public, will be held in New York City on June 24 in conjunction with the Porter-Thurman fight.
