Oscar Negrete Leads Civil Wars  – Oscar Negrete didn’t necessarily cruise to victory but hit some road bumps in his victory on Friday to maintain a spot on the battle of L.A. super bantamweights.

Negrete (15-0, 5 KOs) remained undefeated with a decision win over Juarez, Mexico’s Jose Bustos (11-7-3) at Belasco Theater. The Golden Boy Promotions fight card also hosted the Battle of Badges west versus east to raise money for the Susan G. Komen Foundation for breast cancer research.

If not for lack of power Negrete would be a favorite in the coming battle of L.A. super bantamweights. Of all of them, he seems to lack the finishing power that could guarantee victory. Instead, he’s forced to grind and grin.

That’s what the fans saw at Belasco once again as Negrete fired blow after blow. But nothing seemed to hurt Bustos who never seemed stunned despite the numerous blows connecting on his noggin. After 10 rounds of back and forth pounding all three judges scored it in favor of Negrete.

“I am very grateful to the judges for awarding me the win tonight. This victory is a step closer to getting that shot for the world title,” said Negrete.

In another super bantamweight battle, prospect Emilio Sanchez (13-0, 9 KOs) of Pacoima was matched very tough in facing Mexico’s Hugo Partida (20-8-2). The youthful Sanchez had the speed and power advantage, but Partida has been around the block and knows how to avoid the coup de gras.

Back and forth they exchanged with Sanchez constantly finding his back against the ropes from Partida’s rushes. But once he began unloading uppercuts, the rushes came fewer and fewer. After eight rounds Sanchez was given the victory by decision.

“My uppercuts were the key to pulling out the decision. He kept his head low, so I thought my uppercuts were hurting him,” said Sanchez. “He was a tough fighter and had great experience, and I feel after that I can continue facing tougher opponents and keep climbing the ladder in the division.”

Miami’s Niko Valdez (2-0) arrived fired up to blow the roof off the ceiling against Michael Andrews (0-2) in a super middleweight fight. But Andrews, from Hobbs, New Mexico, had a rock chin and despite enduring some rockets off his chin, he stood upright but bloodied. After three rounds of bludgeoning, the referee stopped the fight one second into round four and had the ringside physician take a look at Andrews. The fight was stopped

Valdez had trouble putting away the resilient Andrews but had no trouble in deciding to donate his entire purse to the Susan G. Komen Foundation.

“It felt like the right thing to give back to such a great cause. Because they’re the real fighters – they fight for life, while I just fight for entertainment,” said Valdez.

Police Wars

LAPD’s Daniel Rosales defeated NYPD’s Nelson Cordero in a middleweight fight.

Oxnard PAL’s Luis Pena edged by LAPD’s Carlos Rosas in a back and forth heavyweight battle. It was perhaps the best amateur fight of the night. It’s rare to see pro heavyweights throw that many punches let alone amateurs.

Santa Monica FD’s Dustin Rodriguez beat NYPD’s Billy Ramirez and included a couple of standing eight counts during the fight.

NYPD’s Jonathon Alvarez edged by LAPD’s Eriverto Montano in a very close and entertaining scrap. Alvarez won by split decision.

LAPD’s Dre Fonseca out-hustled PAL’s Isabel Reyes to win by decision.

NYPD’s Alex Cintron stopped LAPD’s John Byun at 55 seconds into the third round to gain the win.
