Should Pacquiao Stay Retired? The Latest TSS Poll
Should Pacquiao Stay Retired? Here at The Sweet Science, our latest poll asks “Who should Manny Pacquiao Fight Upon His Return?” and gives three fighter choices: Terence Crawford, Adrien Broner and Danny Garcia. The poll gives a fourth option, listing “stay retired” for Pac-man.
There has been a lot of talk recently about Manny Pacquiao returning, with promoter Bob Arum speaking about the matter to the media during last week’s Terence Crawford versus Viktor Postol pay-per-view bout. Arum and Top Rank work with both Danny Garcia and Terence Crawford, making them the two most likely opponents. After Crawford dispatched Postol in methodical fashion last week, Arum hinted that Crawford had already accepted a November date with Pacquiao.
Though Crawford is ahead in the TSS poll with 31.6% of the votes (as of this writing), Pacquiao’s trainer Freddie Roach, who also prepared Postol to face Crawford, seemed to put a damper on the idea, stating “I don’t think we are going to accept or want the Crawford fight for Manny straight away.” Undefeated Danny Garcia has been linked to a match-up with Pacquiao for a long time, and he is currently in second place in TSS’s poll with 26.39% of the votes.
Jessie Vargas, another Top Rank product, has also been mentioned as a potential Pacquiao opponent, however, the TSS poll bypassed Vargas in favor of Adrien Broner. The controversial Broner is currently the last choice to face Pac-man with just 9.29% of the votes. Broner is currently cooling off in an Ohio jail serving 30 days for showing up late to a court hearing and he has already been ruled out by Arum. The poll indicates he will not benefit from a groundswell of fan support either.
You can expect Floyd Mayweather Jr’s name to pop up on the radar at some point, but that rematch is worthy of a whole different poll.
Should Pacquiao Stay Retired?
Interestingly, the polls fourth choice of “Stay Retired” has received the most votes to date, netting 32.71% of the voting. Pacquiao last fought in April of this year when he outpointed Timothy Bradley in their third meeting. Pacquiao retired after the fight, and he himself has not officially come out of retirement, but the writing is on the wall for his return.
The poll results indicate that a good number of fans are not interested in seeing Pacquiao return for another fight. Is a match for the likes of Crawford and Garcia against another younger fighter more appealing?
