PBC on ESPN August 12 – The Premier Boxing Champions rolled into the Turning Stone Casino Resort and Hotel in Verona, New York for the last of this season’s six episodes on ESPN. The main event saw super featherweight prospects Miguel Flores (20-0, 9 KOs) and Ryan Kielzcweski (25-1, 7 KOs) lock up for a 10 round bout. The fans were treated to an entertaining fight capped by a robust final round.

Flores came out as the more active fighter, while Kielzcweski was on his horse using a lot of motion. Kielzcweski appeared to have a size advantage, and he appeared to grow more confident as the fight entered the middle rounds. Though Kielzcweski appeared to settle in and landed good shots that swelled Flores face, Flores punch output did not noticeably drop. It was a game effort by Kielzcweski, who brought a large rooting contingent from his home in Quincy, Massachusetts, but Flores took the well-earned decision by scores of 97-93, 96-94 and 96-94.

in the semi-windup, Yordenis Ugas (15-3, 7 KOs),  a former three-time Cuban national champion, returned from a layoff of more than two years to outpoint late sub Jamal “Shango” James who took the fight on three days notice.  James was the taller man with the longer reach, but Ugas banged away to his body and slowed him down. Increasingly as the rounds wore on, Ugas was able to get in and out and land the more damaging punches. After ten hard fought rounds, the judges had it for Ugas by scores of 99-91, 98-92 and 96-94. In hindsight, by taking the fight on such short notice, the previously undefeated (20-0) James ruined the forward momentum that he had going.

The opening match pitted Jonathan Perez against Badraiel Smith. Both were making their pro debuts. The fight was nearly over immediately when Smith rushed out of his corner and overwhelmed Perez with a barrage of body punches. Backed into a corner, Perez eventually succumbed to give Smith the TKO1 victory.

Next up was Michael Pryor (1-1-2) vs Daniel Castro (0-1). Neither fighter was very well schooled but it was a back and forth war that ended with Castro getting the fourth round TKO.

Next up we had the pro debuts of Larry Gleeson vs Simon Sayes. Interesting name for the latter there! Gleeson was clearly the stronger man and the bullied his way to the UD.

Next up was the pro debut of Ronnie Robidoux vs Greg Thomas (1-8). Like a bull in a China shop, Robidoux made short work of his man, taking him out in the opening round. Robidoux is a talent to watch.

Next up was Darnell Pierce (4-0, 1 KO) vs Louis King (3-2, 1 KO). King did his best Mike Tyson impersonation but was not able to pull off the decision as Pierce landed the cleaner blows that were either set up by a jab or good counter-punches.
