Gennady Golovkin vs Daniel Jacobs Named WBA Mandatory

Gennady Golovkin vs Daniel Jacobs Named WBA Mandatory – On Monday, September 12th the World Boxing Association announced on their website that they have ordered a “unification” bout between their “super” world middleweight title holder Gennady Golovkin and the holder of the “regular” world title Daniel Jacobs.
The announcement comes after a weekend that saw both men win major fights. Jacobs successfully defended his belt in a rematch against Sergio Mora in a match that aired on Spike TV in the United States. That fight saw Jacobs send Mora down in the 4th, 5th and 7th rounds when the referee finally stopped it, giving Jacobs his fourth successful title defense. Golovkin fought Kell Brook in London, winning by 5th round TKO. However his “super” belt was not on the line as the WBA did not sanction the bout, labeling it a mismatch.
The WBA’s announcement now gives the two parties a 30 day negotiating period to come to an agreement, as the fight is being called for to occur within 120 days starting Monday. The time frame being talked about for the fight ranges from late November into January of 2017.
The negotiations could come together very quickly. Barring an about-face by Canelo Alvarez, the fight is certainly the most appealing available fight out there for Golovkin. As for Jacobs. he would pull in his biggest payday by far.
Golovkin’s win over Brook this past weekend was his debut in England, a lucrative market that Golovkin will certainly want to visit again. Matches with Chris Eubank Jr, Billy Joe Saunders or even Carl Froch would all make Golovkin big money in the UK, but throughout his career he has looked to fight in diverse markets. It makes sense for him to return for a fight in the United States, either in Los Angeles or New York, and then return to England.
If no agreement is reached within the 30 days, the WBA will call for a purse bid, but if it comes to a bid then the fight may become more difficult to make. At any rate, Golovkin vs Jacobs is on the clock and at the end of day today, they will have 29 days to come to an agreement.
