Fury vs Klitschko Rematch Postponed Yet Again

Fury vs Klitschko Rematch – According to multiple sources, the rematch between lineal heavyweight champion Tyson Fury and Wladimir Klitschko has been postponed once again. They were slated to fight on July 9 but Fury pulled out with an ankle injury. The bout was rescheduled for Oct. 29 in Manchester.
The news about this latest cancellation came from the Klitschko camp which was informed of this development this morning (Sept. 23). They were told that Fury had suffered another training camp setback, the exact nature of which was unspecified. During the day, UK reporters were unsuccessful in their attempts to reach out to Tyson Fury directly for more information.
The news comes two days after it was learned that Top Rank heavyweight Andy Ruiz had pulled out of his match with Hughie Fury, Tyson Fury’s cousin. Their 12-round contest was to be the chief supporting bout to Fury-Klitschko II.
Suspicions were raised that Tyson Fury’s fight was in jeopardy when he and his manager failed to show for a Sept. 12 press luncheon in London. Fury’s excuse was that his car had broken down. His manager, Mick Hennesey, claimed that he was caught in traffic and that he had inadvertently allowed his cell phone to go dead.
Fury wrested the crown from Wladimir Klitschko on Nov. 28 of last year in Dusseldorf, Germany. The judges favored him by scores of 115-112 twice and 116-111. Fury’s upset ended one of the longest title reigns in boxing history. Klitschko hadn’t lost in 11 years, during which he was 18-0 in title fights. But while the Brits were greatly enthused to see a homegrown fighter cop the prestigious diadem, the reality is that the uneventful fight seemed to say more about the fading skills of Fury’s victim who was approaching his 40th birthday.
Since winning the title, Fury has acquired new fans — and alienated others – with his unfiltered observations. His homophobic and misogynistic viewpoints caused such a furor that when Fury’s name appeared on the short list of nominees for Great Britain’s Sports Personality of the Year, an award first granted in 1956, 140,000 people signed an on-line petition to have him disqualified. More recently it became known that he was the subject of a UK anti-doping probe. A urine sample provided nine months before he defeated Klitschko reportedly contained traces of the banned substance nandrolone.
Fury, undefeated in 25 professional fights, is recognized as the lineal heavyweight champion, but currently owns only two belts. He is the WBA Super World heavyweight champion and the WBO “regular” World heavyweight champion. He is now in jeopardy of seeing both belts stripped from him. In the words of a London Mirror reporter, “Fury’s (title) reign…is descending into farce.”
This is a developing story. Check back for further details.
