Rico Ramos Wins By KO in El Monte, Calif.

Rico Ramos Wins – Former WBA World 122-pound champion Rico “Suavecito” Ramos grabbed three rounds to figure out Prosper Ankrah before lowering the boom in a super bantamweight fight on Saturday.

Though Ramos (26-5, 13 KOs) walked into the ring wearing red boxing trunks he did not see red until the third round bell rang and then he showed the crowd and Ankrah (24-9, 15 KOs) at Los Angeles Badminton Club why he was able to win a world title five years ago.

Ghana’s Ankrah was extremely cautious against Ramos who early on was satisfied with simply peppering the African fighter with touch combinations and jabs. But after two rounds of fancy touching, Ramos opened up with the heavy artillery including three rapid left hooks to the body and head. Down went Ankrah and he did not come close to beating the count.

Ramos was hardly tested but looked sharper than his previous affair at the same venue.

In a co-main event featuring veteran welterweights, Japan’s Gaku Takahashi (15-6-1, 7 KOs) jumped on Denmark’s Kim Poulsen (27-4, 7 KOs) early before his knockout at the end of round two. The Japanese southpaw was aggressive from the beginning and put Poulsen on defense from the opening bell.

The second round saw Takahashi resume his pressure style with great effect. Toward the end of the second round a one-two followed by a right hook connected solidly on Poulsen and down he went. The Danish fighter beat the count but the bell ended the round. When Poulsen went back to his corner it was clear from the blood surrounding his mouth that he was injured. During the recess Poulsen was inspected and suddenly referee David Mendoza signaled the fight was over. Takahashi was declared the winner by knockout.

Takahashi’s fans were loud and expressive as they walked around the ring with Japanese flags and yelled his name.

In a super welterweight match, Kazakhstan’s Madiyar Askeyev (6-0, 3 KOs) out-muscled the awkward Martinez Jackson (3-1-2, 2 KOs) to defeat him by unanimous decision after six rounds. Askeyev floored Jackson with a perfectly timed right cross in the fifth round and was simply too strong for Jackson.

Coachella’s very tall Sebastian Fundora won his pro debut by first round knockout over Garden Grove’s Jose Cardenas (1-4-1) who had immediate problems with the reach disadvantage. A couple of uppercuts from the nearly 5’10” Fundora ended the middleweight contest in the first round. After the first knockdown the fight was allowed to go on, but another well-placed uppercut convinced referee Krysti Rosario to stop the fight.
