Giant Killer Thompson Boxing Putting More Bullets in Chamber in 2017 – Mini powerhouse boxing organization Thompson Boxing Promotions enters its 18th year battling the promotional giants.

Since its inception in 2000 the Orange County-based organization has brought several notable prizefighters to the public eye including Tim “Desert Storm” Bradley and Josesito Lopez.

Those fighters are no longer with Thompson Boxing but they represent the caliber of fighters that are discovered on a regular basis by the mighty runt of promotion companies. They have done well in their recruiting wars.

Next week, NABA super bantamweight titlist Danny Roman (21-2-1, 7 KOs) travels to Atlantic City to face San Antonio’s Adam Lopez (16-0-1, 8 KOs). A win for Roman (pictured in the blue trunks) on Jan. 20 will definitely lead to a WBA world title shot.

This past November, in Las Vegas, another Thompson fighter, Darleys Perez of Colombia, fought to a much disputed split draw against Maurice Hooker in a super lightweight contest. Many felt Perez won handily.

Perez represents the kind of fighter Thompson Boxing discovers every year: the under-the-radar type of fighter primed to upset the over-hyped.

On Feb. 10, Thompson Boxing Promotions stages its first fight card of 2017 at the Doubletree Hotel in Ontario. Welterweight phenom Giovanni Santillan of San Diego fills the main event after a rough injury-filled 2016. Could he be the next to fight for a world title?

“He’s terrific. He had a little bad luck with injuries while training,” said Alex Camponovo, adding that it was ankle and hand injuries that proved problematic. “It kind of slowed him down. We wanted to match him with guys like Antonio Orozco. It didn’t pan out. Giovanni is a very athletic and tough southpaw.”

Santillan has that wide-eyed look you see in defensive-minded boxers and wide stance that resembles Sergio “The Latin Snake” Mora. He’s proven to have a sturdy chin, speed and heart in a firefight.

“He’s got good punching ability with a lot of power behind him. He trains like a maniac,” said Camponovo “He’s got everything to become a champion.”

Also joining Santillan on the fight card will be Northern California’s Ruben Villa, another talented southpaw with genuine power.

“We partnered with Art Pellulo in signing Villa and he looks to be a good one,” said Camponovo, who assesses talent for Thompson Boxing. “We also signed Michael Duchover who we like a lot.”
First, Roman’s fight against Lopez in less than two weeks is the next target for another world title.

“Our trajectory is to go after that belt. We have to go through Adam Lopez which is no easy task,” Camponovo said of the super bantamweight clash at Bally’s Event Center in Atlantic City. “But Danny Roman has transformed himself to more of a boxer. He’s a volume puncher and his boxing has improved dramatically.”

Roman needs a win to stamp his place in line for the WBA super bantamweight title currently held by Panama’s Nehomar Cermeno.

“It’s going to be a good one to get exposure. The champion is Cermeno,” said Camponovo about Roman taking this road to a world title instead of fighting rivals in Southern California. “But because of his position in the WBA rankings we have to chase that belt. He (Roman) put himself into title contention. A lot of guys are not going to fight him unless he has a trinket around his waist.”

Will Roman, Santillan or Villa be the next Tim Bradley or Josesito Lopez?

“It would be stupid of me to say we know exactly what we’re doing. We’re out there looking constantly,” Camponovo said. “We’re always looking. It’s always good to have bullets in your chamber.”
