Wilder Stops Washington in Bama Quick Results – The stage was set in Birmingham, Alabama Saturday night as WBC world heavyweight champion Deontay Wilder (37-0) returned to his home state to face undefeated Gerald Washington (18-0-1).

Washington entered the packed Legacy Arena first, with Wilder following him with the champion’s privilege. The hometown crowd reacted to Wilder as they would throughout the fight. Wilder was making his first appearance since July of last year and he entered the ring under a lot of scrutiny. Wilder faced questions about his right arm, which sustained multiple injuries that July encounter with Chris Arreola.

Wilder Stops Washington

The fight started off at a methodical pace but from the start Washington appeared confident, looking Wilder right in the eye. Washington’s athleticism and his left jab were giving Wilder some problems. Indeed, the broadcasting crew gave the challenger each of the first three rounds.

Wilder came out in the fifth round and changed everything when he sent knocked Washington into the ropes with s big right hand, adding a left for good measure as Washington fell to the floor. Washington got up, but Wilder was right on top of him,  throwing bombs from left field until the referee stepped in. The bottom line: Deontay Wilder retains his WBC world heavyweight title with a fifth round stoppage of Gerald Washington.

HURD-HARRISON

The IBF world title at super welterweight vacated by Jermall Charlo was on the line between Jarrett Hurd (19-0) and Tony Harrison (24-1) in the evening’s co-feature. The two 26 year olds were eager to sign on the dotted line for the chance at a world title and perhaps that tension led to a methodical start to the fight. The first five rounds were fairly even with Harrison perhps getting the better punches in. Towards the end of round five Hurd appeared to land a punch that put Harrison on rubbery legs.

The next three rounds saw the fighters engage more and more and slowly Hurd started to put together rallies. Round eight ended with the most meaningful action of the fight as Harrison answered Hurd’s aggression. Hurd applied more pressure in round nine and eventually he broke through and landed a straight right hand that sent Harrison to the canvas with less than a minute left in the round.

Harrison beat the count, but spit out his mouthpiece as if to signal that he had enough and the referee stopped the fight. Hurd fell to his knees in celebration and a respectful Harrison came over to acknowledge Hurd’s win. Jarret Hurd goes to 20-0 and is your new IBF world champion at 154 pounds.

BREAZEALE-UGONOH

The FOX broadcast opened with heavyweight action as once beaten former Olympian Dominic Breazeale (17-1) entered his fight with undefeated Izuagbe Ugonoh (17-0) as an underdog. The two men started out at a measured pace butthe fight quickly became a slugfest. In round 3 Ugonoh appeared to hurt Breazeale but the American answered and floored Ugonoh with a big punch. The round turned ugly as both men threw bombs. Round four started out at a more measured pace with Breazeale pressuring but a strong exchange from Ugonoh sent Breazeale to the canvas. Breazeale turned the heat up in round five, sending Ugonoh to the flor again. The second time Breazeale landed he sent Ugonoh through the ropes as the referee stepped in to stop it.
