Daniel Franco Update: Boxer Moved to Nebraska to Continue His Recovery

Southern California boxer Daniel Franco was unable to be moved back to his home state because of continued complications from the “brain bleed” he suffered after a prize fight several weeks ago and was moved to Nebraska instead where he will continue his recovery.

Last week it was hoped that Daniel Franco could be moved to Riverside, Ca. which is near his Rancho Cucamonga home. But doctors could not guarantee that the move would be beneficial at this juncture of his recovery.

Franco had to be moved to a more cost friendly recovery hospital and it was recommended that the Madonna Rehab Center in Omaha, Nebraska could provide the services needed for his recovery.

“It was highly recommended,” said Al Franco father of Daniel. “He is still unable to eat food and is still very weak.”

Doctors expect Daniel Franco to remain in the recovery center at least until the first week of August

Since June 10, Franco has been hospitalized and treated for the brain bleed and was given two surgical procedures to reduce the swelling in his head caused by too much blood. The pressure on the brain was an extreme danger to the fallen fighter who suffered a knockout loss to Jose Haro during their fight for the USBA featherweight title.

After getting up from the knockout loss Daniel Franco complained of pain to his knee and extreme pain in his head. He was taken immediately to the closest trauma hospital that could care for his possible subdural hematoma.

The medical staff was able to work on Franco immediately.

Head trauma

Every year more than a half dozen prizefighters, especially boxers, suffer head trauma and suffer brain bleeds or blood clots to the head. Recently, Canadian fighter Tim Hague died from injuries sustained in the boxing ring on Friday June 16 in Canada.

Hague had been an MMA fighter for UFC and other organizations before transitioning into boxing.

A few boxing and athletic commissions such as California State Athletic Commission have adopted using an electronic scanning device (EEG) that can evaluate whether a fighter has any sort of problems before and after a fight.

The parents of Daniel Franco remain by his bedside though Al Franco has to fly back and forth to maintain his business. The mother has been forced to take a leave of absence from her job and the family costs have risen.

This is just the beginning for the Franco family whose sole focus is on the recovery of Daniel Franco. They will need assistance for a variety of things including food, transportation, housing and other necessary items.

So far the fight community has raised more than $44,000 for the family. The family costs grow daily.
