Johnson vs Derevyanchenko on PBC – The Premier Boxing Champions on Fox Sports 1 came to us Friday night from an outdoor setting right on Main Street in Miami, Oklahoma.
Middleweight contenders Sergiy Derevyanchenko, now 11-0 (9) and Tureano Johnson (20-2) delivered a crowd pleasing, back and forth fight that saw both men put together good moments throughout. Johnson was taller and longer but he was not able to keep Derevyanchenko off of him and the heavy-handed Russian picked up the physicality as the early rounds wore on.
Johnson absorbed a lot of punishment from the Russian who was sharper and more precise throughout the fight. Johnson, bloodied but still game, came out aggressive in round 12, seemingly aware that he needed a knockout, but it was Derevyanchenko who beat him to the punch, scoring a knockdown. The referee wisely stopped the fight at this point, giving Derevyanchenko the hard fought win. With the victory, Derevyanchenko becomes the mandatory challenger for the winner of the Golovkin-Canelo fight by decree of the IBF.
The co-feature was a 10-round middleweight match between Hugo Centeno Jr and Immanuwel Aleem. Centeno Jr, a decorated amateur, was making his second start after suffering his first career loss at the hands of undefeated Maciej Sulecki. He was 4 1/2 inches taller than Aleem with a 5 1/2-inch advantage in reach, and also proved to have the harder punch. It was nearing the end of round three when Centeno Jr landed a big left hook on Aleem’s chin that sent him down and out.
The FS1 broadcast kicked off with lightweight action as undefeated 21 year old Austin Dulay took on veteran Carlos Padilla of Colombia. Dulay had a strong first round before letting Padilla get into his comfort zone in round two. Dulay dropped Padilla in round 3. Padilla hung on to end the round on his feet but he would not answer the bell for the fourth, giving Dulay a stoppage win to go 11-0.
The broadcast team saw Ray Flores and Robert Guerrero do the microphone work on the FS1 broadcast.
