Super Welterweight Showcase Results From Barclays – The Premier Boxing Champions put on a terrific night of fights at the Barclays Center Saturday night as the 154 lbers took center stage.
WBA “super world” champion Erislandy Lara faced off against undefeated American Terrell Gausha in the final bout of the evening. The 34-year-old Lara has held the title for a long time but he was in need of a memorable performance to generate interest in future big money fights. Unfortunately for Lara, he delivered his usual low-risk, methodical performance. The lone highlight came in round four when Lara dropped Gausha with one punch.
WBC champion Jermell Charlo met Erickson Lubin in the second of the three world title fights. The 23-year-old Lubin came into the fight with a lot of hype but Charlo shut that down in the opening round with a shot that disconnected Lubin’s brain from his body. Lubin wanted to get up but could not. Jermell Charlo moves to 30-0 with the second successful defense of his WBC world title.
The broadcast opened with IBF world champion Jarrett Hurd’s title defense against Austin Trout. Trout came out strong, determined to press the action. Hurd, the bigger man, seemed to weather the storm and though cut above the eye, the champion picked it up after round six. Hurd continuously pursued Trout and landed the heavier punches. Savvy fighting kept Trout in the fight but after ten rounds the ringside doctor called a halt to the action due to the swelling around Trout’s right eye. Jarrett Hurd successfully defends his IBF world title.
Here at The Sweet Science, we had several of our writers ringside at the Barclays Center so check back later for additional reports and details.
