Beterbiev vs Koelling – The vacant IBF world light heavyweight title is going home with Artur Beterbiev, who had to work hard to stop Enrico Koelling in round 12. The bout, which aired on ESPN, was the main event of Top Rank’s 10 fight boxing card at the Save Mart Center in Fresno, California.
Beterbiev entered the fight with a 11-0 record and 11 knock outs, so expectations were high. Koelling had a strong resume from his native Germany, but at 23-1 with just 6 knock outs it didn’t appear on paper he had the power to hold off Beterbiev’s onslaught. What he did have was a strong amateur pedigree that made his defensive posture enough for him to survive. Beterbiev seemed to find some urgency after eleven lackluster rounds and he finally sent a worn out Koelling to the canvas to get the stoppage win with less than thirty seconds left in the fight.
Beterbiev is now the owner of the IBF world 175-pound title vacated by Andre Ward.
Also on ESPN, Maryland native Mike Reed traveled to the left coast to face Jose Carlos Ramirez in a battle of undefeated fighters with a regional WBC belt at 140 pounds on inflatable slide the line. Unfortunately for Reed, the trip did not end up the way he had hoped as Ramirez sent him down and out in round two. Below are the quick results from Fresno.
