Jousce Gonzalez and Aaron McKenna Win by KOs in Santa Monica

SANTA MONICA-A star studded audience saw prospects battle along the sea shore at the Sugar Ray Leonard Foundation benefit to battle diabetes on Wednesday.

Luminaries such as Cindy Crawford, Cedric the Entertainer and of course Oscar De La Hoya watched a short program of boxing at Santa Monica Lowes Beach Hotel. Three of the four prospects are undefeated.

For those who know boxing, the best match featured Jousce Gonzalez (8-0, 8 KOs) a tall super featherweight from Glendora, Calif. who had never been extended past the first round. All seven previous opponents were knocked out silly in the first round.

Now meet Juan Sandoval.

Sandoval (7-22-1) may look like a pushover based on his record. But the San Bernardino-based prizefighter has never fought an easy opponent. You might say he broke in with lions and has never backed out of a good fight.

The first time I ever saw Sandoval fight was in 2010 against the Puerto Rican national champion making his pro debut. Sandoval had one win and five losses and the Puerto Rican fighter was extremely confident of victory. That night Sandoval gave him a beating and stopped the national champion in the first round. His next fight was against Daniel Franco and he nearly beat him too.

Sandoval has seldom fought anyone other than a highly touted prospect. On Wednesday night it continued against Gonzalez.

Gonzalez looked to unleash the same deadly barrages that had run over seven consecutive opponents in the first round but they hardly made a dent on Sandoval. The first round ended with Sandoval mostly on defense.

The second round saw Sandoval unleash an eight-punch barrage that seemed to catch the slightly taller Gonzalez by surprise. After a few moments Gonzalez tried to retaliate but Sandoval returned fire again. It was the first time anyone could argue that Gonzalez had lost a round in his brief pro career.

Gonzalez fought smarter for the next two rounds but still had problems trying to connect with power shots. Every time he tried to load up, Sandoval would beat him to the punch or tie him up. At the end of the fourth the fight was suddenly stopped by Sandoval’s corner. Although the San Bernardino fighter never was dropped, his corner stopped the fight and that gave Gonzalez the win by technical knockout.

“I give myself an ‘F’ for this fight,” said Gonzalez. “I didn’t use my jab or my footwork. Today I looked sloppy.”

Other Bouts

Ireland’s Aaron McKenna (4-0, 3KOs) was forced to chase Darel Harris (1-2-1) who ran from corner to corner the entire first round with barely a punch thrown. In the second round Harris slowed down a little and attempted a blow here and there but McKenna picked up the pace and connected whenever possible. Finally, in round three after warnings from his own corner Harris stopped the running and began hitting back. McKenna connected with some hefty blows that seemed to put fear in Harris’s eyes. The fight was stopped at the end of the third round and McKenna was deemed the winner by technical knockout.

Other winners were Rommel Caballero (1-0-1) by decision over Daniel Bastien (4-8) in a four round super featherweight bout; and Oscar Acevedo (3-0) by decision over Ricardo Fernandez (3-8-4) in another super featherweight four rounder.

According to the B.Riley FBR, Inc. the celebrity event brought more than $132,000 to the Sugar Ray Leonard Foundation charity for research of diabetes.
