Fast and Complete Results from Eddie Hearn’s DAZN Show in Kansas
Matchroom Boxing honcho Eddie Hearn staged his first two U.S. shows on the DAZN platform in Chicago and Boston. Today the British boxing promoter and his live-streaming partner were in America’s heartland, Mulvane, Kansas, a suburb of Wichita, where jumbo heavyweight Jarrell “Big Baby” Miller was showcased in the marquee bout of a 9-fight card at the Kansas Star Casino.
Big Baby weighed in at 315, giving him a 78-pound weight advantage over his undefeated but obscure Romanian opponent, Bogdan Dinu. Early on it became obvious that Dinu’s only chance was to out-box Miller from the outside and the plan worked in the first two rounds. But one could sense that Miller would close the distance and eventually wear Dinu down with body shots or knock him out.
It proved to be the latter and the end came in the fourth round. Miller decked Dinu with a hard combination and then, when Dinu arose, repeated the process and Dinu wasn’t able to beat the count.
Ranked #2 going in by the WBA and #4 by the WBO, Miller advanced to 23-0 with his 20thknockout. Dinu suffered his first defeat in 19 starts.
Female Fight
WBA/WBC/IBF middleweight title-holder Claressa Shields, America’s most prominent female boxer, had no difficulty turning away Hannah Rankin (5-3), outclassing the Scotswoman in a 10-round fight with no indelible moments. Rankin didn’t have the power to cause Shields (7-0) an anxious moment and she wasn’t busy enough to win any of the rounds. Luckily for Rankin, she has a second career to fall back upon. A graduate of London’s Royal Academy of Music, she has performed with orchestras all over Europe.
Nico
Eddie Hearn couldn’t stage a show in Wichita without including hometown hero Nico Hernandez, a bronze medalist at the 2016 Olympics. A flyweight, Hernandez (5-0 as a pro coming in), was matched against light hitting Houston southpaw Josue Morales whose 8-7-3 record masked the fact that his eight wins came against opponents who were collectively 6-23.
Hernandez figured to make short work of Morales, but he seemed more intent on displaying his full repertoire of punches than seeking the knockout against his defensive-oriented foe and the fight went the full 8-round distance with Hernandez pitching a shutout on two of the cards and winning seven rounds on the other.
Rios-Alvarez
In a fight contested at the catchweight of 152 pounds, former WBA lightweight champion Brandon Rios, who grew up in Kansas, scored a ninth round TKO over Ramon Alvarez, the older brother of Canelo. Rios caught Alvarez against the ropes near the end of round eight and pounded away. Alvarez was saved by the bell, but came out for the ninth, ill-advised as Rios teed off on him again and the fight was stopped at the 0.38 mark. Rios improved to 35-4-1 with his 26thknockout. Alvarez, who was seeking his fourth straight win, fell to 27-7-3.
More
In a 12-round middleweight contest, Philadelphia veteran Gabriel Rosado (24-11-1) showed that he wasn’t yet ready to be put out to pasture by holding Luis Arias (18-1-1) to a draw. Coming in, Rosado was 3-6-1 with one “ND” in his last 11 fights. Milwaukee’s Arias was coming off a lopsided loss on points to Daniel Jacobs. There were no knockdowns. The scores were 116-112, 112-116, and 114-114.
In a match scheduled for eight rounds, light heavyweight Anthony Sims Jr., a second cousin of Floyd Mayweather Jr., stopped overmatched Colby Carter in the second round. The 23-year-old Sims, reportedly 188-12 as an amateur, improved to 16-0 with his 15thknockout. Courter has been stopped in five of his last six fights.
Middleweight Nikita Ababiy, a 20-year-old Brooklynite of Russian extraction, knocked out 40-year-old no-hoper Javier Rodriguez in the opening round. Ababiy was making his second pro start after winning his pro debut in 28 seconds.
Welterweight Jeremy “J Flash” Nichols (9-1-1, 3 KOs) blew away Jeremiah Page in the opening round. Page, from the Wichita, suburb of Andover, Kansas, was stopped for the sixth time in his nine-fight career.
Light heavyweight Immanuel Thompson advanced to 8-0 with a six-round unanimous decision over Leroy Jones (3-5). A Wichita policeman, Thompson was making his first start in 34 months.
