Undercard Results from the Thurman – Lopez Card in Brooklyn

Former unified welterweight champion Keith Thurman returns to the ring tonight at Brooklyn’s Barclays Center with veteran Josesito Lopez in the opposite corner. Although he is undefeated, Thurman has been somewhat the forgotten man in the welterweight division, a weight class that became sexier during his absence with the addition of Terence Crawford and intrusion of Mikey Garcia. Thurman 28-0 (22 KOs) says he looks forward to reminding people that he is an elite fighter. Lopez (36-7, 19 KOs) is making his third stab at a world title after coming up short in matches with Canelo Alvarez and Andre Berto.
The Thurman-Lopez contest is hinged to a very deep undercard. Refresh this page frequently to keep abreast of the results.
The off-TV undercard was chock full of mismatches, at least on paper, but no one told William Deets. A 33-year-old ex-felon from Kearney, Nebraska, Deets shocked the early arrivals with a fourth round stoppage of cruiserweight Marsellos Wilder. The younger brother of WBC heavyweight champion Deontay Wilder, Marsellos had all the best of it until he was clocked with a left hook near the end of the fourth and final round. He beat the count, but his legs were jello and the fight was halted. Wilder was 3-0 heading into the match and had already signed for a fight next month in London on the DeGale-Eubank card. Deets, aka William Antonio Quintana, had won only six of his previous 18 fights.

In a good action fight at 130 pounds, Brooklyn southpaw Chris Colbert improved to 10-0 with an 8-round unanimous decision over Chicago’s Josh Hernandez. The scores were 79-73 across the board. Hernandez rarely took a backward step and showed good skills, but Colbert was faster and busier.
Gary Antuanne Russell (8-0, 8 KOs) blew away overmatched Roberto Almazon (7-9), stopping the Brownsville, Texas entrant in the second round. Almazon was down twice before the bout ended at the 59 second mark of round two. Russell, a 2016 Olympian, is the younger brother of WBC featherweight champ Gary Russell Jr. Almazon has now been stopped five times.
Connecticut southpaw Chordale Booker (14-0) stepped up in class and won a unanimous decision over Columbia’s Juan De Angel (21-10-1) in an 8-round middleweight match. Booker, who competed in the 2016 Olympic trials, had the match well in hand when he scored the bout’s lone knockdown in the seventh frame. The scores were 80-71 and 79-72 twice. De Angel has lost five of his last six but has been matched tough throughout his career and is better than his record suggests.
Philadelphia featherweight Stephen Fulton improved to 15-0 (7) with a fifth round stoppage of Marlon Olea in a bout scheduled for eight rounds. Olea is 14-0 in his native Columbia and and 0-4 on U.S. soil. Fulton dominated from the get-go before the ref had seen enough.
Clarksburg, Maryland middleweight Mark Duncan (3-0) TKOed Albuquerque’s Daniel Garcia-Flores (0-3). The referee stopped at the contest in the middle of the third round at the behest of the ringside physician.
In a 4-round welterweight match, 6-0 Tyrek Irby, from Landover, Maryland, won a unanimous decision over Connecticut’s Jonathan Figueroa (2-2). The scores were 40-36 and 38-37 twice.
In the opening bout of the evening, super middleweight Mycheal Teal, who fights out of St. Petersburg, Florida, needed only 30 seconds to dismiss San Antonio’s Jacob Landin. Teal improved to 2-0; Landin 0-3.
