Saavedra Upsets Hometown Fighter and Brewart Scores KO in SoCal

ONTARIO, Calif. – An upset win in the main event and a scintillating knockout lit up the Friday night fights.

Mexico’s Luis Saavedra (8-6, 3 KOs) upset Santa Ana’s Mario Hernandez (6-1) with a first round knockdown then out-punched the hometown fighter to win by unanimous decision on the Thompson Boxing Promotions card at the Doubletree Hotel.

Saavedra had fought before in the Doubletree Hotel last October and nearly upset the hometown fighter on that day too. This time he was victorious.

The fighter from San Luis Potosi started quickly with a right hook and left uppercut combination the floored Hernandez in the first round. It caught both Hernandez and his large following by surprise.

While switching from southpaw to orthodox Saavedra kept Hernandez off balance and was able to connect often against the bull rushes of the Santa Ana fighter. After eight rounds Saavedra won the bantamweight fight by unanimous decision 79-72 and 78-73 twice.

It was the first time in six attempts that Mexico’s Saavedra defeated an undefeated fighter. He finally snapped that streak emphatically with the victory.

Impressive KO and Other Results

Richard Brewart (4-0, 2 KOs) electrified the crowd with a one-punch knockout win over Mexico’s Abel Reyes (4-3, 4 KOs) in a super welterweight clash between power punchers. Brewart dropped Reyes early with a body shot in the first round but the Mexican fighter rallied back with some solid shots of his own.

Brewart had superior speed but was caught occasionally while moving in. In the first round he targeted the body, but in the second round the Rancho Cucamonga fighter timed Reyes’ punch and rifled a right cross that connected perfectly and sent him down in a heap. The Mexican fighter was unconscious before he hit the ground at 1:58 of round two for a knockout win. Referee Ray Corona didn’t bother to count.

Leo Ruiz (4-0, 2 KOs) cruised by Mexico’s Adan Ahumada (3-7-2, 2 KOs) to win by knockout in their super welterweight match. Ruiz fired a three-punch combination then connected with a left hook that wobbled Ahumada and prompted referee Raul Caiz Jr. to stop the fight at 49 seconds of round two.

In a lightweight contest South Whittier’s George Acosta (7-0) out-punched Huntington Beach’s Guadalupe Arroyo (3-15) to win by unanimous decision 40-36 on all three judge’s cards. Acosta had the size and reach advantage but Arroyo had a tricky defensive style and turns his head a lot that causes him to get hit frequently behind the head.
