Undercard Results From the Big Showtime Card in Southern California

Boxing returns tonight to the sports park in Carson, California, that served as the temporary home of the Los Angeles (nee San Diego) Chargers. A super featherweight title fight between WBA champion Gervonta Davis and challenger Hugo Ruiz anchors the Showtime Championship Boxing tripleheader. Bracing the three TV fights is a very deep undercard.

Erickson Lubin, in his second fight back after being starched by Jermell Charlo, re-intruded himself into the 154-pound mix with a dominant showing over Ishe Smith. The fight was waived off after three one-sided rounds during which Smith, who hadn’t previously been stopped, was on the canvas four times. Lubin, a 23-year-old southpaw, improved to 20-0 (15). This is undoubtedly the end of the road for Smith (29-11), a 40-year-old father of six.

Sacramento’s Maurice Lee (9-1-2) and Oakland’s Lennard Davis (4-1-5) battled to a draw in a six-round contest in the 140-pound division. Both fighters were on the deck during the crowd-pleasing mill.

Juan Heraldez, a North Las Vegas junior welterweight, stopped Eddie Ramirez in the seventh round of a see-saw fight. A short right hand knocked Ramirez to the canvas and the ref stopped it when he arose on unsteady legs. Ramirez was on the canvas twice earlier but was always in the fight. Heraldez improved to 16-0 with his 10th stoppage. It was the third straight loss for Ramirez (17-3), a fighter from Aurora, Illinois, who was once considered a promising prospect.

In a 4-round bantamweight contest between thirty-somethings, Israel Luna (2-0) turned away Angel Carvajal (2-11) via a unanimous decision. The scores were 39-37 and 40-36 twice.

Super featherweight Angelo Leo (16-0, 8 KOs) kept his undefeated record intact with an 8-round unanimous decision over Alberto Torres (11-2-3).  Leo scored two knockdowns over the Sacramento southpaw who was game but outclassed. All three judges had it 79-71.

An accidental clash of heads in the third round terminated the flyweight contest between Ava Knight (17-2-4) and Argentina’s Luna del Mar Torroba (12-9-2). The bout was declared a no-contest. Knight was the first of nine Mayweather Promotions fighters appearing on tonight’s card.

In a six-round bout between super featherweights, LA-based Francisco Ochoa improved to 14-0 with a unanimous decision over veteran Luis May (21-12-1). All three judges had it 60-53.

Lorenzo Simpson (2-0, 2 KOs), an 18-year-old Baltimore lad, blew away Derion Chapman (3-3-1) in the opening round of a super middleweight contest. Simpson knocked Chapman down with an overhand right and the referee intervened when Chapman arose on unsteady legs.

In the opening bout of the evening, bantamweight Jose Balderas achieved his first win by stoppage and advanced to 6-0 when overmatched Jerrod Miner (1-4-2) was all done in after three rounds. Balderas is the older brother of former U.S. Olympian Karlos Balderas.
