“No domestic can beat me,” said former world champion Liam Smith.

Once again Smith proved no one in the United Kingdom has the talent to compete with him including Anthony Fowler who was knocked out on Saturday in the super welterweight clash.

Smith (30-3-1, 17 KOs) knocked out Fowler (15-2, 12 KOs) in a battle between two Liverpool, England fighters to take away the WBA International super welterweight title at the Echo Arena in Liverpool, England.

After losing to world class talent such as Mexico’s Saul “Canelo” Alvarez, Jaime Munguia and Russia’s Magomed Kurbanov, the fighter known as “Beefy” returned to his hometown and beat up young upstart Fowler.

At first, it wasn’t easy.

Fowler jumped ahead with some quick combinations and a steady supply of jabs. But soon Smith kept moving forward and looking to time the incoming fire. In the fifth round during a Fowler exchange Smith countered with a right cross and down went Fowler.

For the next two rounds Smith was in control and though Fowler fought bravely, he could not match the experience and was caught with a left hook that ended the fight at 2:04 of the eighth round.

Smith beat another domestic fighter.

“I always knew he would be competitive,” said Smith of his foe. “He is a quality fighter.”

Now it’s on to the elite.

Another Super Welter Battle

A battle for the British super welterweight title saw Troy Williamson win by brutal knockout over former titlist Ted Cheeseman in one of the best fights of the year. No surprise.

Williamson and Cheeseman engaged nonstop for 10 rounds with each testing the other’s chin with bludgeoning shots to the chin. Defense was not necessary in this fight of attrition.

Around the seventh round it seemed Cheeseman had taken control and was about to end the fight. But somehow Williamson survived. The effort expended by Cheeseman may have been his demise.

Williamson took control during the ninth round and had Cheeseman on his heels. After surviving the ninth round Cheeseman did not survive the 10th when he was caught with a sneak left hook to the chin and down he went in sections. The referee stopped the fight at 2:04 of the 10th.

It was one of the best action-packed fights of the year

Female Bantamweight Title

America’s Jamie Mitchell wasted no time in setting a fast pace and outworking Shannon Courtenay to take the WBA bantamweight world title by majority decision in Liverpool, England on Saturday.

One day after losing the title on the scale, Courtenay (7-2, 3 KOs) lost the title to Mitchell (7-0-2, 4 KOs) in the boxing ring before more than 11,000 fans at Echo Arena. Though one judge scored it a draw, it was not that close.

Mitchell opened up the fight on full-on attack mode and charged forward behind a steady barrage of blows. Courtenay had her back on the ropes and countered with power shots. Some landed, but nothing slowed Mitchell’s flurries in the first round.

It was four Mitchell blows for every Courtenay blow.

After 10 rounds one judge surprisingly scored it 95-95, while two others saw it 97-93 and 96-94 for Mitchell.

“I feel awesome,” said Mitchell. “I did what I said I would do.”

Courtenay felt otherwise.

“I felt I won the fight,” she said. “I landed heavier shots.”

Mitchell was sitting alongside when Courtenay made her comments.

“She said I didn’t land any shots but look at her face,” Mitchell said.

Mitchell now holds the WBA bantamweight title and seems willing for a rematch.

Other Bouts

Kieron Conway (17-2-1) used his height and reach to win by decision after 10 rounds versus gritty JJ Mefcalf (21-2) in a super welterweight fight. No knockdowns were scored in a back-and-forth battle.

It looked like Conway would have an easy time during the first three rounds. But soon Mefcalf found success working inside and displayed a tireless assault. It just wasn’t enough to convince the judges who scored it 96-94 and 96-95 twice for Conway.

Peter McGrail (1-0) won his pro debut by unanimous decision after six rounds versus Ed Harrison.
