Avila Perspective, Chap 174: Daniel Jacobs, Red Boxing and More

Funny how the world of boxing has shrunk.
While former middleweight world champion Danny Jacobs fights in England a Southern California promoter stages its first boxing card of the year and everyone in the world can see both cards regardless of location.
Streaming has become accessible to all and through this medium the world can watch Red Boxing Promotions fight card in Commerce, California after watching Matchroom Boxing Promotions card from London, England.
Let’s start with Matchroom’s fight card that pits Jacobs (37-3, 30 KOs) against John Ryder (30-5, 17 KOs) in a 12-round elimination bout for the WBA super middleweight title on Saturday Feb. 12, in London, England. DAZN will stream the Matchroom card.
The ultra-classy Jacobs has long been one of the best middleweights in the world. Now he’s moving up a weight division to test the super middleweight waters at 168-pounds.
“Granted we win this fight, which I’m sure we will, my next fight should be an opportunity to become a two-division world champion. I have the opportunity to do that and this guy is in the way,” said Jacobs who fought both Gennady Golovkin and Saul Alvarez and lost by decision. ““It has been one of my goals as a professional to fight in the UK, probably in London because I’ve been here before and I know how the magic works. I know how deep the crowd is into their boxing. I look forward to experiencing that. Good city, good town, good people.”
Ryder is a southpaw super middleweight who went 12 rounds against champion Callum Smith in a decision loss three years ago. The height difference proved to be too daunting for Ryder who lives in London.
Also on the same fight card, rising female super bantamweight star Elie Scotney (3-0) meets Argentina’s Jorgelina Guanini (9-3-2) in a 10-round fight for a regional title.
Red Boxing
On Saturday evening, a boxing card pits numerous Southern California prospects on display at the Commerce Casino in Commerce, California.
The city of Commerce is located next to East Los Angeles which has long been a haven for many top prizefighters for the last 100 years like Oscar De La Hoya, Seniesa Estrada and Jojo Diaz.
Bantamweights are the main event as Adrian Alvarado (5-0) meets Sergio Lopez (4-7-3). It will also be streamed on Vivantlivetv.com. It’s a free streaming medium that people can subscribe for free. To access the Red Boxing card here is the link: https://www.vivalivetv.com/channel/evolution-4-ppv-1
Also featured on the Red Boxing card will be Brandon Cruz, Jesus Guzman, Alexis Alvarado, Kevin Nunez, Jose Elias, Mario Aguirre, Francisco Casillas, Larry Romero, Joshua Garcia, Anel Dudo, Jaime Rios, Nick Rubalcado, Armand Manuelian and Calvin Glover.
Two female bouts are also part of the impressive boxing card. Merari “Dinamita” Vivar (4-0) meets Elizabeth Tuani (1-5) who, despite her record, is a very solid fighter. It should be an entertaining super bantamweight fight. The other female bout features Stephanie Chavez (0-0) making her pro debut in a super flyweight match with Dawn Mazarakis (0-1).
Many stars have come out of Commerce Casino fights including Leo Santa Cruz, Saul Rodriguez and Adelaida Ruiz. It’s also a very convenient location to get in and out of via freeway. Doors open at 5 p.m.
Covid restrictions are in place. Masks must be worn and proof of vaccination is required or a negative Covid test taken within 24 hours.
Bam
Prizefighting’s youngest male world champion emerged with Jesse “Bam” Rodriguez grabbing the vacant WBC super flyweight world title with an impressive win over former champion Carlos Cuadras of Mexico.
Rodriguez is 22 and the younger brother of Joshua Franco, 26, who holds the WBA super flyweight world title. Both train in Riverside, California at the Robert Garcia Boxing Academy.
Bam Rodriguez was fighting as light as 108 pounds in the light flyweight division but when he was offered to fill in as a late replacement for Thailand’s Srisaket Sor Rungvisai who was injured, he immediately jumped up two weight divisions to accept it.
If you saw the fight Rodriguez immediately showed his power and boxing skills in out-maneuvering Cuadras to win by unanimous decision last Saturday in Phoenix, Arizona. It was not a surprise to many fight reporters who predicted on several boxing web sites that Rodriguez would win. He’s been that impressive.
