Gilberto Ramirez Advances to 44-0 at the Expense of Easy Mark Dominic Boesel

RINGSIDE REPORT by TSS SPECIAL CORRESPONDENT LAUREN RODRIGUEZ — Ontario, CA — The temperature wasn’t the only thing that sizzled at Ontario’s Toyota Arena on Saturday night. Golden Boy Promotions alongside Zurdo Promotions held a victorious fight night. The event, live-streamed on DAZN, included eight bouts.

The main event was a WBA light heavyweight title eliminator between Mazatlan Mexico’s Gilberto “Zurdo” Ramirez who brought a record of 43-0 (29 KOs) and Dominic Boesel (32-2, 12 KOs) of Freiburg, Germany.

Boesel quickly fizzled as Ramirez immediately worked his opponent’s body. Boesel was soon attempting to dodge Ramirez, multiple times placing Ramirez in a chokehold.

By the second round, the German fighter was left vulnerable as he covered his face with his mitts, moving to each corner.

In the third round, Ramirez attacked his opponent with uppercuts to the body, Boesel remained unable to offer a proper rebuttal.

The majority of the fight, Boesel cowered, attempting to flee from his forceful opponent.

The bout was immediately cut short in the 4th round as a right hand to the body brought Boesel down. The stoppage, at 1:33 of the fourth round, left Ramirez undefeated with 44 victories and 30 knockouts.

Moving forward, Ramirez is ready to take on Dimitry Bivol (20-0, 11 KOs), an upset winner over Saul “Canelo” Alvarez.

When asked about his reasoning for believing he will win against Bivol next, Ramirez joked, “I’m bigger, stronger, faster, handsome.”

Ramirez spoke about potentially moving up to cruiserweight, a division Ramirez has already begun aiming for.

The co main event was a clash for the WBA Continental Americas lightweight title between William Zepeda (26-0, 23 KOs) and Rene Alvarado (32-12, 21 KOs). The scheduled 10-round bout went the distance as neither rival was willing to back down. Throughout the entirety of the bout, both Zepeda and Alvarado were relentless as their battle often turned into a brawl. The two fighters kept the scores close as neither left an empty second. But by the 10th round, Alvarado’s speed dwindled.

The lightweight boxers battled nonstop as they waited for the other to tire out. Zepeda prevailed by scores of 98-92, 97-93 and 96-94 to remain undefeated.

A battle for the vacant NABA flyweight title between John “Scrappy” Ramirez (9-0, 7 KOs) and Jan Salvatierra (8-1, 4 KOs) ended explosively. It was a vicious combination by Ramirez that immediately flung Salvatierra through the ropes and onto the judges’ table. The bout was called at 2:25 of round 1, a knockout victory for Ramirez.

John Ramirez, who trains alongside Gilberto “Zurdo” Ramirez stated, “I’m here to be great… I’m taking all the risks. I want these big fights.”

Opening the DAZN broadcast was a featherweight fight between Katsuma Akitsugi (10-0, 2 KOs) and Jose Gonzalez (23-10-1,13 KOs). Akitsugi was a force to be reckoned with as he quickly had Gonzalez stumbling and missing punches. The Japanese southpaw plowed combinations into Gonzalez who struggled to retaliate.

It was at 1:10 of the fourth round that Gonzalez unexpectedly forfeited. The technical decision knockout gave the undefeated Akitsugi his 10th victory.

Other Bouts

In the super featherweight division, Jorge Chavez (3-0, 3 KOs) faced Eduardo Melendez (6-32, 2 KOs) in a scheduled 4-round bout. In the third round, Chavez, the crowd favorite, brought the audience to a roar, throwing a series of combinations at his unresponsive opponent. The bout was called to a halt in the third round at 1:57, a knockout earned by Chavez.

In the super featherweight division, Japhethlee Llamido (7-0, 3 KOs) battled Edgar Figueroa (4-3-1, 2 KOs). Llamido displayed solid footwork as he floated around the ring, landing solid jabs.

In the fifth round, Figueroa attempted combinations before being knocked down by a shot to the body. The referee stepped in and stopped it, a TKO victory for Llamido.

In the lightweight division, Carlos Nava (8-0, 5 KO) was up against Yampier Hernandez (1-1) in a 6-round bout. The bout was cut short in the 5th round as Hernandez fired combinations before being knocked down by a shot to the body. The bout was scored a TKO in the 5th round.

The first bout of the night was a cruiserweight match between Josue Obando (20-34-2, 15 KOs) and Kareem Hackett (10-0, 5 KOs). The bout went the distance with Hackett getting the decision.
