Daniel Dubois KOs Trevor Bryan on a Don King Card in Miami

Trevor Bryan, who held a secondary version of the WBA world heavyweight title, talked a lot of trash preceding tonight’s clash with challenger Daniel Dubois, but the oddsmakers weren’t fooled. They made the British invader a 12/1 favorite and Dubois performed concordantly, dominating Bryan en route to a fourth-round stoppage before a sparse crowd on a Don King promotion at Casino Miami Jai Alai in Miami, Florida.

Dubois (18-1, 17 KOs) was far busier. He wobbled Bryan in the first round and strafed him with a series of heavy shots near the end of round three. A short left hook terminated the fight. Bryan went down face first and fell back down as he struggled to get himself upright.

Dubois hooked up with trainer Shane McGuigan after suffering his first defeat, a 10^th-round stoppage at the hands of Joe Joyce. This was his third fight back since that mishap. With the win he becomes the WBA’s mandatory opponent for the winner of the rematch between Oleksandr Usyk and Anthony Joshua, but Dubois isn’t likely to nab that fight anytime soon.

This was the first pro loss for Trevor Bryan, an Albany, New York native who was 22-0 (15) heading in after missing all of 2019 and 2020.

Other Bouts of Note

Light heavyweight Ahmed Elbiali (22-1, 18 KOs), whose lone defeat came at the hands of spoiler Jean Pascal, won his sixth straight fight, toppling 34-year-old Venezuelan Dervin Colima by DQ-4. Colima entered the match with a misleading 16-1 record. The lone previous time he moved up in class, he was mashed by Badou Jack who stopped him in five lopsided rounds. Elbiali, an Egyptian by birth, is nicknamed “The American Pharaoh.”

Welterweight Tre’Sean Wiggins, who fights out of Altoona, PA, blew away Travis Castellon in the opening round, scoring three knockdowns before the scheduled 10-rounder was halted. Wiggins, 32, improved to 14-5-1. Fort Lauderdale’s Castellon (17-5-1) lost for the fifth time in his last six starts. In all five defeats, he was knocked out within the first three rounds.
