Jousce Gonzalez KOs Jose Angulo at Fantasy Springs Casino

Southern California’s Jousce Gonzalez walked into the prize ring knowing dependence on judging can be capricious and delivered a knockout with extreme prejudice against Jose Angulo in their super lightweight clash on Thursday.
Though slightly behind on the scorecards, Gonzalez (13-0-1, 12 KOs) delivered a single shot that Ecuador’s Angulo (14-3, 7 KOs) couldn’t survive before a large crowd at Fantasy Springs Casino in Indio, Calif.
Just a few days ago his older brother Joet Gonzalez had battled former champion Isaac Dogboe in a furious battle. After 12 rounds two judges gave it to Dogboe and one to Gonzalez. Younger brother Jousce Gonzalez was not about to allow that to happen in his fight.
Angulo was busier with his jab and lead rights to the head and then quickly would grab Gonzalez to stymie any counter-attack. It was a tactic he used often for the first two rounds despite warnings from the referee.
In the third round Angulo began firing a four-punch combination as Gonzalez marched forward more aggressively. Angulo put up a high guard and Gonzalez shot a left to the body and down went the Ecuadorian fighter. He was counted out at 2:29 of the third round.
“That’s how you do it!” shouted Jousce Gonzalez after referee Ed Hernandez Sr. counted out Angulo. “The guy had never been knocked out. I was the first guy to do it.”
After the fight Gonzalez announced he wants big fights against any of the other top lightweights in the Golden Boy stable including Ryan Garcia. We shall see.
Other Bouts
In the co-main event, Uzbekistan’s Elnur Abduraimov (10-0, 9 KOs) needed less than two minutes to eliminate Mexico’s Leonel Moreno (11-2-1, 9 KOs) from standing up. A left to the liver during an exchange of blows ended the night for Moreno and gave Abduraimov the IBF North American super featherweight title.
Abduraimov, a former Olympian, trains with the Diaz brothers in Indio and gave up five pounds to Moreno. He did not care and proved why. Scary talent.
Another Joel and Antonio Diaz protégé, Manuel Flores (13-0, 10 KOs), knocked out Mexico’s Daniel Moncada (15-7-2) with a left hook to the chin at 1:45 of the third round in a super bantamweight clash.
A battle between undefeated middleweight prospects saw Eric Tudor (5-0, 4 KOs) knock down Mexico’s Edgar Valenzuela (7-1, 6 KOs) twice in the second round with short rights to the back of the ear. The fight was stopped at 2:04 of the second round by referee Ed Hernandez.
In a female flyweight match Gabriela Fundora (8-0, 4 KOs) battered Mexico City cop Lucy Nunez (7-13) for eight continuous rounds. Fundora’s six-inch height advantage and power shots proved too much for the tough Mexican fighter. It was a surprise that the fight ended in a unanimous decision win for Fundora after eight rounds of battering.
It was Fundora’s third time fighting in the US despite her Coachella, California residence.
Another female fight between super lightweights saw Jasmine Artiga (9-0-1, 5 KOs) use her speed and height advantage effectively in the first two rounds. Then, New Mexico’s Amy Salinas (4-2) adapted and rallied behind some gritty inside work. Both fighters had their moments and after six rounds one judge saw it 58-56 for Salinas while two others saw it 60-54 and 58-56 for Artiga to give her the win by split decision.
