Bernard Hopkins Discovery Floyd Schofield Bombs Out Rosas at Fantasy Springs

Newly signed Floyd Schofield showed why he was signed and placed on the main event as he needed less than a round to knock out veteran Daniel Rosas in a lightweight fight on Thursday night in Indio, California.
“Kid Austin” Schofield (12-0, 10 KOs) made his debut for Golden Boy Promotions by blasting out Mexico’s Rosas (22-6-1, 15 KOs) in the first round at Fantasy Springs Casino. The fight was never in doubt from the opening second.
“I could see in his face he didn’t want to fight,” said Schofield.
Schofield was discovered and signed by Bernard Hopkins. When the legendary middleweight and light heavyweight world champion first contacted him, he thought it was a hoax. Nope, it was the actual Executioner himself.
The lightweight phenom caught the attention of the boxing legend and was signed and delivered to fight the main event at Fantasy Springs. Hopkins guaranteed that Scofield was ready for headlining status and the youngster proved him correct.
Schofield opened up the first round with a concentrated two-fisted attack on Rosas body as the Mexican tried maneuvering while his back was against the ropes. Schofield continued to pummel both sides of Sosa’s body.
Few blows were coming from Sosa so Schofield continued the attack with head and body shots inter-mixed. Finally, a blistering left hook to the chin collapsed Rosas to the floor. Referee Ray Corona didn’t bother to count and stopped the fight at 1:37 of the first round.
“I’m glad he got up safe,” Schofield said of his fallen foe.
The Georgia native who trains in Texas said he’s hoping to clear out the talented number of fellow lightweight prospects. Immediately. Among those he mentioned were Marc Castro, Keyshawn Davis and other undefeated 135-pounders.
Other Bouts
A battle between two female fighters who lost to world champion Seniesa Estrada saw Mexico’s Anabel Ortiz defeat Guatemala’s Maria Santizo by unanimous decision. Both seek another world title opportunity.
Ortiz, a former minimumweight world titlist, was the far more accurate puncher and used her experience to offset the aggressive attacks of Santizo. The Mexican fighter slipped and countered effectively against the slightly taller Guatemalan boxer.
Santizo found success when she attacked the body but Ortiz soon solved that problem and closed out the fight with more effective punching. All three judges scored in favor of Ortiz. The scores were 79-73, 78-74, and 77-75.
A super featherweight fight saw a battle between rival gyms as Joshua Garcia (6-0) remained undefeated by handling Christian Lorenzo (3-4) who trains at Maywood Gym. Garcia trains with Manny Robles in neighboring South Gate and his youth and size proved the difference in out-pointing the 33-year-old Lorenzo.
Jorge Estrada (4-0) edged out Sergio Gonzalez (6-12-1) to win by majority decision after four rounds in a super welterweight fight. The stronger Estrada discovered strength and power are not enough and managed to gut out a victory.
