Avila Perspective, Chap. 298: Female World Title Fights and More

Buckle up.

A trio of female world title fights lead the charge this week in New York, Georgia and in the United Kingdom.

England’s Sandy Ryan (7-1-1, 3 KOs) defends the WBO welterweight title against America’s Mikaela Mayer (19-2, 5 KOs) on Friday at Madison Square Garden in New York on Friday Sept. 27. ESPN will televise.

The Top Rank card also features some potential ticket attractions like Puerto Rico’s Xander Zayas (19-0) who faces Damian Sosa (26-2) in a super welterweight clash; and Brooklyn featherweight Bruce Carrington (12-0) looking to prove himself against Uganda’s Sulaiman Segawa (17-4-1).

But its really about the women on this card.

Despite all the trash talk their world title fight is not a debate. Both are tall and both like to bang. It may be difficult to score because they have similar styles and only two-minute rounds to prove superiority.

Of course, trash talk does sell some tickets.

“She knew she was doing something a little bit shady. She knew there was going to be some problems with that,” said Mayer about Ryan taking away one of her trainers.

Though Ryan claimed to respect Mayer from their amateur days:

“I don’t respect her as a person now with how she’s been leading up to this fight.”

It all comes down to Friday night.

Down in Georgia an all-female fight card takes place in Atlanta.

The main event pits Alycia Baumgardner (15-1) versus Delfine Persoon in a 10-round battle for the IBF, WBC and WBO super featherweight world titles at Lux Studios on Friday Sept. 27. BrinxTV will stream the card that includes a half dozen female bouts.

Baumgardner was suspended for PED use and now faces former champion Persoon. Its power versus volume punching.

The all-female card also features Rosalinda Rodriguez (13-0) an undefeated bantamweight meeting veteran Amy Naert (10-3) for a regional title.

England

WBO lightweight titlist Rhiannon Dixon defends against former champion Terri Harper on Saturday, Sept. 28, in Sheffield, England. DAZN will stream the Matchroom Boxing card.

Also, super bantamweight Peter McGrail (9-1) meets Brad Foster (15-3-2) for a regional title and super star prospect Galal Yafai is scheduled to perform in a flyweight fight. However, he’s already signed an agreement to face Sunny Edwards on November 30.

But its all about the women on this Saturday card.

Dixon, 29, is a southpaw with pop and is making the first defense of the world title she captured against Argentina’s Karen Carabajal last April. She’s fast, technical and faces a very experienced fighter in Harper.

Just how much does Harper have left?

The former super featherweight and super welterweight champion was battered by Sandy Ryan when they fought last March. Perhaps she had a bad day.

Fans will find out on Saturday if Dixon is deserving of elite status or if Harper is not.

Southern California

Lightweights lead the charge in East L.A. as Tenochtitlan Nava (9-3-1) and Jesus Torres Beltran (7-4-1) meet at Salesian High School on Saturday Sept. 28. Heavyweights take charge with Tsotne Rogava (9-0) meeting Alex Flores (19-4-1) for a regional title at Pacific Palms Resort in City of Industry, Calif. on Saturday Sept. 28.
