Duva Believes Kovalev HAS TO BE on Post-Floyd P4P List
So this is supposed to be the last dance for Floyd Mayweather.
He will do a violent waltz with Andre Berto, pocket his $32 million plus, and slide off into the sunset, to other endeavors. Or so he says..
If he holds to that promise, we wonder, who will inherit his unofficial throne, as the best of the best, pound for pound.
Bleacher Report had a crack at that concept, with my pal Kevin McRae compiling a list.
Kathy Duva read the piece and frowned.
“Where’s my guy Sergey Kovalev on there? He should be on there!”
Terence Crawford..Canelo Alvarez…Andre Ward..Roman Gonzalez…and Gennady Golovkin. Those are the picks of McRae, who I find to be a thoughtful writer. Duva differs in her take on his choices..
“I think Kovalev belongs on the list!” she told me. “The fact that he’s already won all those titles, beat those top guys in that division.”
She has a grand plan, even, to prove her contention.
Sometime next year, not in the first quarter, but sometime next year, Duva thinks a Kovalev vs. Ward match will get made. Winner is lead dog, pulling boxings’ sled when Floyd jets, she said.
“I think it is inevitable that Kovalev will come fact to face with Ward,” Duva said. “And that’s a real pound for pound matchup when it happens. Not one guy out of his prime, like, arguably, when Pacquiao finally got to fight Mayweather.”
Duva, with an optimistic bent–lordie, it’s necessary in this busines, you can’t let cyncism break you–said she’s liking what she’s hearing from Adonis Stevenson, who is seeming open to fighting Kovalev. He better hurry up if he wants to do it before he turns 40, she noted.
“We will see what he says about that after he fights,” she said. “It is encouraging to hear him say that.”
I am with Duva, I like Kovalev on a list of possible baton takers from Floyd. What say you, readers?
