El Perro at Primm, Nevada

Published

on

Mexico’s popular Alfredo “Perro” Angulo returns to the boxing ring on Friday when he meets Philadelphia’s Gabriel Rosado (12-3) in a 10-round junior middleweight main event at Buffalo Bill’s Resort and Casino in Primm, Nevada. The fight card is promoted by Gary Shaw Productions.

It should be some brutal action. Both are pressure fighters who prefer to slug it out rather than slip and move.

Angulo (15-1) returns to the ring after suffering his first professional loss against Kermit Cintron in a battle for the IBF title. The Mexicali native who now lives in Downey and trains in Maywood, had caught the flu the week of the fight but refused to cancel the fight. Despite the weakened condition he battled for all 12 rounds and lost by decision.

“I’ve never felt that way in a fight before,” said Angulo, adding that he did not want to cause hardship to the organizers of the fight card and the television viewers. “The day of the fight I weighed 152 pounds.”

The weight limit is 154 pounds and most fighters weigh about 164 pounds the day of the actual fight.

Angulo will face Rosado who was a sparring partner for Sugar Shane Mosley when he was preparing for his match against Antonio Margarito. He’s a big strong junior middleweight and has never been an easy test for anyone.

In a super middleweight bout, undefeated Anthony Dirrell opposes Alfredo Contreras and heavyweight Travis Kauffman faces Victor Barragan. Also on the fight card are undefeated boxers lightweight Sharif Bogere, welterweight Said El Harrak, junior lightweight Anna Donatella Hultin and US Olympian Gary Russell Jr. a featherweight.

Primm is located on the Interstate-15 Freeway on the way to Las Vegas. For tickets and information (800) FUN-STOP.

Boxing Chatter

WBC heavyweight titleholder Vitali Klitschko of the Ukraine has informally accepted to fight Riverside’s Chris “The Nightmare” Arreola who is ranked number one. Contracts have not been signed but the date for the heavyweight clash is expected to be the Staples Center in Los Angeles on Sept. 26.

“That’s the date we’re all moving forward on,” said Dan Goossen, whose Goossen-Tutor Promotions sponsors Arreola. “Right now in the talks we are trying to get everyone on the same page in getting this history making fight made.”

Henry Ramirez, who trains Arreola, said the Mexican-American heavyweight will move his training camp to the San Fernando Valley.

“There’s too many distractions in Riverside,” said Ramirez.

IBF flyweight titleholder Nonito Donaire (21-1, 14 KOs), who is considered one of the top boxers pound for pound, moves up to the junior bantamweight division and faces Mexico’s Rafael Concepcion (13-3-1, 8 KOs) on Saturday Aug. 15. Also on the card is WBO featherweight titleholder Steve Luevano (36-1-1, 15 KOs) defending his title against talented Bernabe Concepcion (29-1-1, 16 KOs). Tickets for the fight card are still available at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas.

Andre Ward, a 2004 Olympic gold medallist, and IBA heavyweight titleholder James “Lights Out” Toney will be co-main events at the Pechanga Resort and Casino on Sept. 12. Better buy your tickets now.

Ward (19-0, 12 KOs) is scheduled to take part in an international super middleweight tournament against WBA titleholder Mikkel Kessler on Nov. 21, in New York, but first will fight Shelby Pudwill (22-3-1, 9 KOs) in a 10-round super middleweight bout.

Toney’s opponent has not been determined but the popular heavyweight has been a major attraction at that casino in three prior events. For tickets and information (877) 711-2946.
