Local Rivals Arrellano & Reyes Fight To A Draw in Corona

CORONA, CALIF.-Fellow sparring mates Jonathan Arrellano and Juan Reyes battled for eight rounds in a featherweight bout that ended in a majority draw on Friday.

Ontario’s Arrellano (13-2-2, 3 Kos) and Riverside’s Reyes (9-1-2, 1 KO) know each other very well, but neither could take advantage at the Omega Products International arena. The Thompson Boxing Promotions fight card had only one local bout but it was a doozy.

Arrellano has a slick boxing style and counter-punch emphasis while Reyes is a punching machine with only one gear. The one common factor is their lack of punching power. After eight turbulent rounds to judges scored it a draw and one favored 76-74 for Reyes.

In a middleweight bout Colombia’s Alex “Principe” Theran (15-0, 8 Kos) captured every round against Texas Justin Williams (4-9, 2 Kos) according to the judges, but several of those rounds saw some good trading of hits. Theran has looked ordinary in his last two bouts and could be above his head with competition. The southpaw boxer-puncher was tagged several times by Williams, who could have hurt the Colombian if he had power.

L.A.’s Danny Roman (7-1-1, 3 Kos) used blows to the body to extinguish Tijuana’s Jose Iniguez’ night. It was obvious in the first round that a left hook by Roman caused a knee-jerk reaction from Iniguez (7-16). In the second round Roman zeroed in on the Mexican’s soft body and down he went from a left hook. After getting up, Iniguez was floored with a right to the body. The second time he did not get up and was counted out at 2:56 by referee Ray Corona.

A battle between two Northern California welterweights was won by Oscar Godoy (11-2, 6 Kos) after less than two rounds with Rogelio Castaneda Jr. (26-17-3, 8 Kos). Combination punches drilled Castaneda to the ground early in round two. Then a right cross delivered the Mexican fighter again to the floor. His corner threw in the white towel at 2:37 forcing referee Jack Reiss to end the fight.

Hemet’s Fernando Fuentes (3-1) defeated Texas Alex Hipolito (1-2) by unanimous decision after four rounds of a junior featherweight clash. Fuentes was much more accurate against the harder punching Hipolito and was able to win every round according to two judges.
