Sergey Kovalev-Cedric Agnew Set For March 29, in Atlantic City

Sergey Kovalev is now a must see boxer, someone who is expected to whack out his foe, whoever that may be, in pretty short order. Fans have been craving a showdown between the 30-year-old Russian who owns a 23-0-1 (21 Kos) mark and is promoted by Main Events and the Haitian-born Canadian resident Adonis Stevenson, who holds the WBC light heavy strap. But alas, that one is still simmering, apparently, as all parties jostle for position, and money. In the meantime, Kovalev will stay busy and meet Cedric Agnew, a 26-0 (13 KOs) hitter fighting out of Chicago, and to break out of the chains of relative anonymity, on March 29, at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City. HBO will show the scrap.

Agnew is 27, and hasn’t tangled with anybody nearing Kovalev in terms of talent. He beat Yusaf Mack in his last outing, UD12, which came in April 2013.

We can all hope, I guess, that Kovalev handles Agnew, and Adonis beats Andrzej Fonfara on May 24, in Canada, and then all parties can get on the same page, and make Kovalev-Adonis. From my standpoint, it looks to me like Team Kovalev is most eager to fight the bright marquee fights, so I guess that puts the spotlight on Team Adonis, and HBO, to find common ground, and get ‘er done!

A confident Agnew said, “I think as of now he has not seen a person of my skill level.” He added, “At the end of the day you have to fight world champions to be a world champion and be considered the best. He’s a world champion. I am looking to be considered one of the best.”
