Freddie Roach Talks Cotto-Golovkin, Cotto-Canelo
Freddie Roach was present at Madison Square Garden on Friday afternoon and spoke to TSS, so I peppered Coach Roach about a few different matters, including what might be next for his middleweight stud, Miguel Cotto. I wondered if he thinks Cotto, who holds the middleweight crown he wrested from Sergio Martinez last month, would be inclined to fight Triple G, Gennady Golovkin, if Golovkin beats Daniel Geale tomorrow.
“It’s an interesting fight, but I haven’t talked to Miguel or his people about it yet,” said the head of the Wild Card Gym, in Cali, who is in NYC to corner Glen Tapia* at MSG. “We gotta talk about a December date here (at MSG), maybe a tuneup fight, not that I like tune-ups so much…I thought the red-headed kid would be next. We heard that Canelo doesn’t want to talk about that right now. He wants a so-called tuneup fight, or another fight (before fighting Cotto), because he didn’t look so good in his last fight (against Erislandy Lara last month). He didn’t look great. I think he’s still a young fighter. But I’m a little more interested in that fight (than a fight versus Golovkin). But I’ll give you a better idea tomorrow. This is my first time seeing Golovkin fight. I mean, we know how great he is,” said Roach, breaking into a s— eating grin, “but I just know from watching him on TV.”
Footnote: Tapia’s fight against Salim Larbi was cancelled because a red flag popped up on his blood work. He told me it was no big deal, but NYSAC scratched his bout.
