San Diego Revving Up Fight Scene; Females Active in SD

A pretty good fight card takes place in San Diego on Friday night.

In the past couple of years the border city has begun producing a number of quality boxers. On Oct. 24, Bobby D Presents puts on another solid card filled with prizefighters from San Diego, Mexico and Canada at the Crowne Plaza Hotel.

Junior welterweight prospect Emmanuel Robles (11-0-1, 3 Kos; pictured above) risks his undefeated record in an eight-round bout with Mexico’s Carlos Valenzuela (6-1). Robles, a southpaw, has stepped up in competition for his last two fights. Valenzuela tries to return to the win column after getting stopped in the first round in his last fight.

Cruiserweight Dmytro Kucher (21-1, 15 Kos) meets veteran Galen Brown (42-28-1, 25 Kos) in another eight-round fight. Kucher, who hails from the Ukraine, has been racing time to get to the top. He lost his last fight in Monte Carlo by majority decision and needs a win to get back on the winning track. Brown has engaged with many top flight fighters. He can be dangerous.

Amaris “Diamond Girl” Quintana was scheduled to meet Mexico’s Yesenia Martinez but visa problems prevented the fight from going forward. Both San Diego’s Quintana and Martinez are ranked as minimumweights and the female clash was expected to be pretty intense.

“My goal as a female boxer is to give it my all as I always have made my dream come true and I want to get that world title and of course help women’s boxing grow,” said Quintana, 25. “As we all know, we should receive the same privileges as the men do! And take it to the top because anything is possible if you put your heart and mind to it.”

Quintana had fought for the world title once before and looks forward to getting back to the boxing ring.

“Unfortunately I won’t be fighting, but I am ready for what comes and I will stay ready and hope to get at least two more fights by the end of the year,” Quintana said. “Also like to thank my coaches Juan Medina and Edgar Sandoval for getting me ready, but hope to get back in the ring soon.”

One female bout remains, with Canada’s Brandy Badry facing Arizona’s Jillian Lybarger in a junior welterweight match.

Badry moved down from Edmonton, Canada to find more opportunity in the prize ring.

“I’m very excited to fight and have my first American fight,” said Badry who has six pro fights so far. “This is the heaviest I’ve fought and have been having a hard time keeping the weight on.”

The Canadian brunette hopes to find more action in California.

“I’m looking forward to fighting in San Diego because of the boxing scene out here and its supportive fans. I look forward to getting in there again.”
