Update on Andre Ward Ring Return
At times, it seems like this is Floyd Mayweathers’ world and we just share some space with him. Floyd pretty much did two things in the last few week, as he made us wait to see if he’d take The Fight.
1) Take the air out of the room, and siphon interest in most if not all other boxing matches and potential matches and 2.) Get lots of interest in his Shots app.
I chatted with manager James Prince, who works with Andre Ward, and of course Bryant Jennings, who tests Wladimir Klitschko on April 25, at Madison Square Garden.
When, I wondered, are we going to hear when and where and against who for Andre Ward, out of the ring since November 2013. Should be pretty soon, Prince told me.
He noted that so much attention was on WWFD, What Will Floyd Do, so his timeline for the Ward return on HBO has been affected a bit.
“I have a meeting later this evening,” he told me, which will help clarify the Ward return. Roc Nation’s boxing arm signed Ward and will certainly look to make a splash with his first Roc outing, with some doubters casting stern glances at them, wondering their grand plan. I heard Roc was negotiating with Miguel Cotto, but haven’t been able to connect with their spokesman to confirm or deny as yet….Certainly a Ward/Cotto one-two punch would convert many of those doubters into a positive camp.
Regarding that meeting, Prince said he was talking to Team Ward folks, not people from the potential opponents’ camp, or from HBO. “We haven’t settled on an opponent yet,” he said.
I’ve heard Mikkel Kessler is in the mix… True or false? “There are a lot of them in the mix,” Prince said.
Hey, boxing fans have gotten used to waiting, we can hold out for Ward news a bit longer…
