TSS Q-n-A: Hank Lundy
Hank Lundy meets Mauricio Herrera in a 10-round junior welterweight bout on Saturday July 11 at the Los Angeles Memorial Sports Arena. The intriguing matchup, promoted by Golden Boy Promotions, will be featured on HBO Latino. The telecast begins at 11:00 p.m. ET.
Can the tough-as-nails Lundy, who has suffered competitive losses to the likes of Ray Beltran and Thomas Dulorme, make things rough enough on Herrera to make it a dogfight? We checked in with Lundy to get his take on the forthcoming scrap.
The Sweet Science: You’ve been in a lot of very good, close and competitive fights that ended up going the other way. What can you do against Herrera to get over the hump?
Hank Lundy: Go in there and be Hammerin’ Hank Lundy — the old throwback Hank Lundy. If you’re watching me you know what I’m talking about. Just flat-out destroy him.
TSS: What do you think is your best attribute as a fighter? Is there anything you think you still need to work on?
HL: My heart and will to fight anyone, any place and any time. Skill-wise, I have all the tools, but I’m working every day to be better than just good.
TSS: Philadelphia is world-famous for great fighters. What does it mean to you to be part of that lineage?
HL: Man, it means a lot. I fight with it in my heart and you see it in every fight. I love my city and one day I will be one of the best to represent and put on for Philadelphia.
TSS: Coming off the close loss to Dulorme, how badly do you feel you need to beat Herrera in order to reach your career goals?
HL: I won that fight. The world and HBO saw that, but I’ve been dying to get back in the ring. I’m on fire and burning inside to fight Herrera and show the world the best Hammerin’ Hank Lundy.
TSS: What is your prediction for the Herrera fight?
HL: I’m going to hurt Herrera bad and make him quit in the ring or on the stool. I will retire him.
TSS: Who is the best fighter you ever faced and what did you learn from the experience?
HL: All of them. I’ve fought some good fighters. In every fight, you learn, and that’s what takes you to the next level — learning and working on your skills.
