Daniel Jacobs Defeats Sergio Mora by 2nd Round TKO as Mora Suffers Leg Injury

On the undercard of ESPN’s PBC broadcast tonight in Brooklyn, Daniel Jacobs(30-1, 27 KOs) was awarded a TKO victory over former light middleweight champion, Sergio Mora (28-3-2, 9 KOs), when Mora’s right leg folded under him after going down under a barrage of punches from Jacobs in the 2nd. Mora got up off the canvas, but was limping considerably and was unable to continue the fight for Jacobs’ WBA middleweight title.

The opening round was sleepy until Jacobs landed a massive right hand with 1:22 remaining in the round, sending Mora onto his back. Surprisingly, a wobbly Mora returned the favor just 22 seconds later and dropped Jacobs with a counter left. Both men recovered by the end of the round, setting the stage for what was shaping up to be a spectacular bout. The 2nd round was very even until Jacobs opened up and Mora went down, suffering the injury.

After the fight, you could hear Mora saying he heard his knee “pop” and believed his ankle was broken. This had to be a bitter disappointment to Mora who despite the second knockdown was clearly in the fight and giving Jacobs all he could handle. For Jacobs, who had won 9 consecutive fights by knock out against so-so competition, this fight may have created more questions than it answered. Being dropped by the light punching Mora was certainly unexpected.

Jacobs’ personal story of defeating bone cancer is extraordinary, but as Teddy Atlas pointed out during the fight, his path to a world title was a fairly easy one. That being said, this was a fun fight to watch while it lasted and Jacobs ability to hit and get hit played well on television and will likely lead to bigger fights. Whether he’s as good as his record remains to be seen.

While Mora was demanding a rematch after his misfortune, Jacobs was calling out Peter Quillin and dismissing Mora’s request.
