Former Team USA Boxers – Super prospect Chris Pearson and two others that should have performed together on Team USA in this past summer’s Olympics are appearing together in Las Vegas.

Junior middleweight Pearson, junior welterweight Frankie Gomez and junior featherweight Joe Diaz are all on the Golden Boy Promotions fight card on Saturday at the Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas. USA FOX Espanol will televise the event.

With lightning fast hands, technique and knockout power Pearson should have been a solid favorite to be a major part of the USA Boxing team. Instead the Ohioan opted to turn professional.

“I’m looking forward to my first fight in Vegas,” said Pearson (7-0, 6 Kos) who fought for the L.A. Matadors two years ago in the World Boxing League. “I train a lot longer. You’re training for a 10 or 12 round fight now. But boxing is boxing.”

“I look forward to beating and dominating guys and look forward to Al Haymon putting me in against the best,” said Pearson. “My goal is be ranked in the top 10 by the end of the year.”

Pearson was a heavy favorite to make the Olympic team but bid good bye to his fellow Team USA members back in November 2011.

“The Olympics is not what it used to be. I didn’t have the motivation to be in it,” said Pearson who will be fighting in an eight round fight. “My goal is to be a world champion.”

Another who was supposed to be on Team USA was East L.A.’s Gomez. Like Pearson he felt that amateur boxing was not his cup of tea and turned professional back in April 2010. He hasn’t looked back.

Gomez (14-0, 11 Kos) is scheduled to fight Lanard Lane (13-2, 8 Kos) in a 10-round bout in the main event. The heavy-handed Gomez fought only two times in 2012 but looks to be more active this coming year.

Diaz (1-0) is the only one of the three who actually did participate in the London Olympics this past summer. The South El Monte prizefighter meets Jose Ruiz (2-2) in a scheduled four round contest. Diaz, 20, made his pro debut this past December at the Sports Arena in Los Angeles.
