Commerce, CA.-Prizefighting returned to the smaller shows with a bang on Saturday.

Sensational knockouts and tightly contested fights ruled the nearly dozen bouts at the Commerce Casino fight card staged by Red Boxing Promotions, All Star Boxing and Elite Boxing Promotions.

In the main event East L.A.’s Adrian Alvarado (3-1-1) tangled with Las Vegas’ Sergio Lopez (4-7-4) in a six-round bantamweight clash that went back and forth with fans riveted to their seats.

Alvarado showed off his athleticism and was countered by the skills of Lopez who were as evenly matched as possible. The East L.A. fighter needed a few rounds to discover that Lopez was using the same counter measures every time he attacked.

Still, neither fighter could mount enough momentum in just six rounds and though one judge saw Alvarado the winner 59-55, it was ruled differently by two other judges who scored it 57-57 for a majority draw.

Lopez now has four draws and Alvarado gained a draw and a lot of experience from the clash.

Other Bouts

Pomona’s Ernesto “Tito” Mercado (4-0) knocked down Pennsylvania’s Marc Misiura (2-3-1) twice before referee Ray Corona ended the fight in the first round. A three-punch blitz by Mercado sent Misiura down early in the round. Then another three-punch charge delivered Misiura down again. Mercado looked hungry for the knockout. Misiura never surrendered but a four-punch volley convinced the referee to end the fight at 2:58 of the first round.

After a confusion on the set amount of rounds San Diego’s Brandon Cruz (8-2) won the four round super featherweight fight over Tijuana’s Jesus Guzman (8-6) by unanimous decision. Cruz was able to win every round by using unorthodox combination punches that landed flush. Guzman took all the big shots and scored heavy with his own counter shots but never enough to win the round. All three judges scored it for Cruz 40-36.

Armand Manuelian (2-0) needed less than two minutes to knock out Chicago’s Calvin Glover (0-4) with a body shot at 1:52 of the first round in a welterweight fight. Manuelian caught Glover with a left hook to the chin to floor Glover who survived that knockdown. But a body shot sent Glover to the floor again and ended the night for the Chicagoan.

East L.A.’s Merari Vivar (5-0) remained undefeated with a unanimous decision win over tough Elizabeth Tuani (1-6). Vivar was more accurate and the busier fighter but Tuani had her moments. All three judges scored it for Vivar who was an amateur standout with a pro style. She seems to be very comfortable as a professional.

Stephanie Chavez won her pro debut by unanimous decision after four rounds versus Dawn Mazarakis (0-2) in a super flyweight fight. Both fighters were very tight for the first three rounds but Chavez landed more blows. The fourth and final round found both fighters more comfortable and that resulted in the best round of the fight. All three judges scored it for Chavez 40-36.

Jose Elias (3-0) out-hustled fellow Mexican Mario Aguirre (3-15-1) over four rounds in a super lightweight fight. Neither fighter was ever hurt but Elias was the busier fighter. Aguirre showed a good chin and solid defense but did not connect enough. All three judges scored it 40-36 for Elias.

A featherweight firefight saw Francisco Casillas Jr. (2-0, 2 KOs) exchange furious blows with Larry Romero (0-2) with both landing powerful exchanges. Then Romero looked to connect with another left hook and was caught by a perfect right counter and was stopped immediately and unconscious at 27 seconds into the first round. Referee Jack Reiss did not bother to count. It was a perfect knockout win for Casillas (pictured) and one of the most dramatic in 2022 so far.

Joshua Garcia (3-0) started out quick against Angel Dudo (1-3) but soon found himself in a firefight in the last two rounds. Garcia was quicker but Dudo proved determined to out-slug the Moreno Valley featherweight. All three judges scored for Garcia 40-36, 39-37 twice.

Alexis Alvarado (4-1, 3 KOs) returned to the win column with a dominant performance in defeating Puerto Rico’s Kevin Nunez (0-1) by unanimous decision after four rounds in a super flyweight bout. Alvarado utilized a stiff left jab and pinpoint combinations that kept Nunez off balance. All three judges gave every round to Alvarado who fights out of La Puente, Calif.

In a fight between super bantamweights Bakersfield’s Nicholas Rubalcado (1-1) caught El Monte’s Jaime Rios (0-1) with a right hook and down he went for the count at 30 seconds of the third round. Up to that point both fighters were not shy about letting loose, but Rubalcado never seemed to miss with the right hook from the southpaw stance. It was his first win as a pro.
