Watch Dierry Jean TONIGHT on the Boxing Channel
Is Dierry Jean the single most underrated boxer in the sport today? His promoter Camille Estephan thinks so; the promoter, who runs Eye of the Tiger, based out of Quebec, chuckled when he admitted on Friday early afternoon that as Jean's promoter, he cannot be objective. But still, Estepehan told me, judge for yourself. Tune in to see if Jean is all that tonight, Friday night, on the Boxing Channel. Jean headlines a five bout card, which starts streaming at 7 ET, against Ivan Cano, the brother of Pablo Cano, who gave Paulie Malignaggi all he could handle in a loss at the Barclays Center on Oct. 20.
The Quebecer Jean, age 30, is 22-0, with 14 KOs, and is coming off a UD12 win over Lanardo Tyler in Quebec on May 19. He is ranked No. 5 by the WBC. Cano is coming off a UD10 win over 17-0-1 Mauricio Pintor, and Estepehan told me he won't be coming to lay down.
“We feel Dierry is ready to put on a show, mentally and physically,” the promoter said. “Why is he underrated? He has probably the fastest hands, his conditioning is second to none, he's the most powerful pound for pound I've seen. He's extremely athletic, I can't say enough about this kid. I'm his promoter, I can't be objective,” he said, with a laugh.
In the near future, Estephan would like to see Jean get a crack at Philly champ Danny Garcia, after the buzz spreads on Jean.
Estephan also touted Ghislain Maduma, a lightweight from the Congo who now lives in Quebec. He's the second best prospect, behind Jean, on the Tiger roster, the promoter told me. At 10-0, he meets 25-12-2 Sergio Priotti, and Estephan belives he can be moved along fairly swiftly.
Estpehan also manages David Lemiuex, who he hopes will tussle at the Bell Centre on Dec. 14. Also, he promotes Nicholson Poulard, and said talks are ongiong to get him a shot at light heavy champ Beibut Shemenov. Tiger fighter Bermane Stiverne gets a chance to make a splash when he fights Chris Arreola on Dec. 15 in Venezuala, in a WBC title shot eliminator. Also, he shares Antonin Decarie with Lou DiBella, and wants to get Decarie back in the ring soon as well.
“We pride ourselves in being the hardest working team in boxing,” the promoter said in closing.
