Canelo Media Day in Big Bear Lake
BIG BEAR LAKE-A media invasion took place in the San Bernardino Mountains as more than 100 journalists drove up the mountain via trucks, vans, cars and a broken down bus that had several shaking their heads on Tuesday.
Canelo (seen above, in Showtime-Esther Lin photo) media day was happening at Sugar Shane Mosley’s cabin where WBC junior middleweight titlist Saul Alvarez (42-0-1, 30 Kos) is preparing for his showdown with WBC welterweight titlist Floyd “Money” Mayweather (44-0, 26 Kos) on Sept.14, at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.
A bus carrying dozens of writers and photographers from Los Angeles had stalled several times on its way up 330 Highway. Luckily I live rather close to Big Bear and drove up in my own car. I made it in 60 minutes.
Alvarez has been training for more than a month and looked sharp as ever. Many of Golden Boy Promotions heavy hitters were present, such as Oscar De La Hoya, Eric Gomez, Marylyn Aceves and Bill Caplan.
De La Hoya, Mosley and Jack Mosley were interviewed for their take on the pending conflict between Alvarez and Mayweather. Only Sugar Shane Mosley had fought both Alvarez and Mayweather and was willingly giving out his expertise.
“Canelo has good hand-speed and good defense,” said Mosley, who is preparing to fight Australia’s Anthony Mundine next month. “Both have equal power.”
De La Hoya came closest to defeating Mayweather when he lost by split decision back in 2007. He proved that there is a way to crack the Mayweather conundrum. But can Canelo do it for 12 rounds?
Canelo has said that no one has beaten Mayweather so there is no easy answer. But he does consider advice necessary.
“Of course I seek their opinion,” said Alvarez regarding De La Hoya, Mosley and others.
Eddy Reynoso, one of Canelo’s trainers, said that you cannot compare Alvarez to Mayweather’s previous opponent Robert Guerrero.
“They are two completely different fighters,” said Reynoso.
Just a little more than two weeks remains before the undefeated prizefighters meet inside the boxing ring.
“I will beat Mayweather,” said Alvarez.
